IMG_0564Veal.JPG
Two runs in the top of the 10th inning gave the Scorpions a win over the Saguaros for the second day in a row. With the score tied at 1-1 for three innings, 3B Brandon Crawford (Giants) got things started in the 10th by reaching base and advancing to second base on a fielding error. RF Domonic Brown (Phillies) moved Crawford to third base on a ground out, and an intentional walk to 1B Brandon Allen (Diamondbacks) put Scorpions on the corners. CF Cole Gillespie (D'backs) lined a single into center field, which brought in Crawford with the go-ahead run. The Saguaros changed pitchers, but reliever Evan Scribner (Padres) got two strikes on 2B Chase d'Arnaudand then threw two wild pitches, which allowed Allen to scramble home with an insurance run.

Scorpions' reliever Steve Edlefsen (Giants) was the pitcher of record during the top of the 10th, and he was credited with the win, after having pitched a scoreless 9th. Craig Baker (Rockies) retired the Saguaros in order in the bottom of the 10th, including 2 strikeouts, to preserve the win and earn a save.

Pirates' Donnie Veal (photo above) made the start for the Scorpions. He needed only 18 pitches (14 strikes) to retire 6 batters in order, including 3 strikeouts. Danny Moskos pitched a scoreless 5th inning, allowing a lead-off walk, but then getting a strikeout and an around-the-horn double play, with Chase d'Arnaud making the pivot at second base. The Pirates' third pitcher on the Scottsdale team, Tony Watson, relieved Moskos and pitched a scoreless 6th inning, allowing a lone double.

Japanese league pitcher Ken Nishimura pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Daniel Turpen (Giants) gave up the only Peoria run, on a double and a single in the 7th inning.

The Scorpions scored their first run in the top of the 1st inning. Pedro Ciriaco (D'backs) opened the game with a single, and he scored on Domonic Brown's double.

Chase D'Arnaud singled in the 8th inning, but was caught trying to steal second base. He also flied out three times and struck out.

The Scottsdale Scorpions opened their Arizona Fall League season with a win, and Pirates' prospects CF Jose Tabata and 2B Brian Friday both contributed RBI to the cause.

With Joe Martinez (Giants) on the mound for Scottsdale, the Saguaros scored one run in the top of the 1st inning. The Scorpions answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd. C Buster Posey (Giants) reached base on a fielding error, LF Thomas Neal (Giants) walked, and 3B Darin Holcomb (Rockies) singled, loading the bases for Brian Friday. Friday grounded to third base, where Neal was forced out, but Posey scored on the play.

Scottsdale added 3 runs in the 4th inning. Neal and Holcomb led off with back-to-back singles, and Brian Friday collected another RBI when he reached on a force attempt that was complicated by a throwing error, allowing Neal to score. SS Hector Gomez (Rockies) singled to drive in Holcomb and move Friday to second base. Jose Tabata loaded the bases with a walk. After a pitching change by the Saguaros, DH Brandon Crawford brought in Friday with an RBI ground out, giving the Scorpions a 4-1 lead.

Peoria got closer with a run in the 5th and another in the 6th. The run in the 6th came without the benefit of a hit, as Scorpions' reliever Scott Maine (Diamondbacks) walked 3 batters and hit 2 more. It would have been more runs, but a fly ball out turned into a double play when LF Thomas Neal alertly fired the ball in to Brian Friday at second to double off a runner.

Jose Tabata gave the Scorpions another run in the 6th inning, when he walked, stole second base, and scored on Brandon Crawford's RBI double. Tabata added an RBI single in the 8th inning, scoring Hector Gomez, who had doubled. Two batters later, RF Domonic Brown (Phillies) blasted a 2-run homer over the right center field wall, stretching the Scorpions' lead to 8-3. Peoria added another run in the top of the 9th, but it wasn't enough. Edgar Garcia (Phillies) earned the win for the Scorpions. He relieved Joe Martinez and pitched 2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and a walk.

Winter Leagues, and a change

The Mexican Pacific League and the Venezuelan Winter League begin play tonight (Friday). MVN is making some changes over the weekend, and I'm not sure how that will affect specific posts.... stay tuned!

Winter Ball: Venezuelan Winter League

The Venezuelan Winter League begins play tomorrow, and with the big population (relatively speaking) of Venezuelans in US baseball, there are always plenty of Pirates farmhands and friends playing in this league.

Unfortunately, some of the team rosters are still a little sketchy... and if you find someone I've missed, please let me know. (UPDATED as of Oct 10th)

Leones de Caracas -- RHP Ronald Uviedo is on the roster, along with former Pirates' RHP Romulo Sanchez, INF Jose Castillo, and C Carlos Maldonado. INF Marco Scutaro, who was with the Indy Indians in 2000-01 is also listed. Team USA fans will also recognize the name of OF Josh Kroeger (White Sox). P Jose Ascanio is also listed, but he just had surgery.

Navagantes del Magellanes-- RHP Yoslan Herrera and RHP reliever Jean Machi will be on the mound for Los Bravos. SS Argenis Diaz is also on the team. Two former Indy Indians' outfielders will be joining them: Mike Ryan (2007) and Jorge Cortes (2008).

Bravos de Margarita -- this team is managed by Pirates' coach Luis Dorante, and 3B Neil Walker will be joining him. Also on the preliminary roster: OF Jonel Pacheco (Altoona Curve), P Wilson Ortiz (West Virginia Power), INF Elevys Gonzalez (Bradenton Pirates and State College Spikes), P Edgar Gutierrez (Bradenton Pirates), and P Jhonatan Ramos(Bradenton Pirates). Some former Indy Indians' pitchers on the team: reliever Scott Strickland (2006), starter Michael Tejera (2007), and Tim Harikkala (2000-02).

Tigres de Aragua -- Pirates SS Ronny Cedeno will be playing for Los Tigres. Altoona catcher Miguel Perez and Indy/Altoona catcher Hector Gimenezare on this roster, along with former Indy Indians C Alex Delgado(2003 - 04) and INF Anderson Machado.

Tiburones de la Guaira -- Pirates' farmhand RHP Rafael Quintero (Bradenton Pirates) is in the bullpen for La Guaira, along with former Pirates' farmhand Ronald Belisario (after the Dodgers finish in the post-season) and former Indy Indian (2002-04) Roberto Giron.

Cardinales de Lara -- Pirates' minor league pitchers Derek Hankins (Altoona Curve) and Gerardo Esparza(Bradenton Pirates) will be pitching for Lara, along with former Indy Indian (last in 2006) veteran Giovanni Carrera., who always puts in a few appearances for Lara.

Caribes de Anzoategui -- West Virginia Power teammantes RHP Gabriel Alvarado and INF Adenson Chourio are both playing for Los Caribes. Pirates' Venezuelan League pitcher Humberto Iriarte is also on the roster, one of four 20-year-old pitchers on the team. Don't think that's young -- there are four more who are 19, and five who are 18.

Aguilas de Zulia -- former Pirate P Chris Hernandez is playing for Zulia.

Other fun stuff:
The Sporting News has a list of the "Best Sports Cities" in the US, and due to the Steelers and the Penguins, Pittsburgh is listed at #1. Some others of interest --
#20 -- Indianapolis
#48 -- State College, PA
#174 -- Lynchburg, VA
#299 -- Bradenton, FL
#334 -- Altoona, PA
#343 -- Charleston, WVA (home of the Power)

They have a clever system of awarding points based on teams, winning percentages, attendance at sporting events, etc. But how close is the competition when you get down to the 200's and the 300's. Is Larman, Miss at #386 that much better than Batavia, NY at #387? (Rochester, NY is #267).
