This may be one of the lightest weeks in terms of opponent’s top prospects that we’ll see.
The Indianapolis Indians lined up against the lone Top 100 representative on any list, but unfortunately said prospect Brennen Davis has been on the IL since the middle of May. Davis had back surgery in June and was sent on a rehab assignment to the ACL Cubs as of Monday the 15th. Caleb Kilian — who has had a very abbreviated taste of the MLB this season — at one point this season found himself on the backend of the Baseball America Top 100 but has since fallen off during updates. Some may recognize the name Hayden Wesneski who was a trade deadline acquisition by the Chicago Cubs from trading Scott Effross to the New York Yankees.
In Double-A the Altoona Curve take on the Harrisburg Senators whose roster wasn’t upgraded by the Juan Soto and Josh Bell haul. The Senators roster only has three of the Washington Nationals Top 30 prospects (per Pipeline) without a single one ranking within the Nationals Top 20. The Curve were within an arm’s reach of the 2nd half division title before they ran into the bucksaw of Bowie Baysox and then the Akron Rubberducks. A week after taking five of six from the Binghamton Rumble Ponies they have a chance to keep momentum by facing a Senators team that ranks near the bottom of the league for offense and pitching.
Moving south the Greensboro Grasshoppers head to Georgia to face the Rome Braves who currently sit atop the South Atlantic League’s South division. Even as the Grasshoppers managed to lose four of six in each of their last two series they still find themselves only 4.5 games back of the North’s 2nd half division title. The Braves affiliate only has two of the Braves Top 30 prospects (per Pipeline) but neither are in the Top 10. One item of note is that the Braves offense is 2nd in the league in team OPS which could spell trouble for a Greensboro rotation that has largely struggled over the course of the season.
In what lines up to be the marquee matchup in terms of standings the Bradenton Marauders take on the Tampa Tarpons who currently trail the Marauders by two games for the Florida State League West’s 2nd half division lead. Following the weekly trend though the New York Yankees affiliate has only four of the Yankees Top 30 prospects (per Pipeline) but none within the Top 10.
