Prospect Watch: DSL Pirates Both Beat the Mets; FCL Pirates Get Rained Out

It’s Monday, so the full-season teams are off and the short-season teams take center stage. Believe it or not, this is the last full week of the regular season for the short-season teams. The FCL Pirates have a chance for the playoffs and the DSL Pirates Gold already clinched a playoff spot, so we will be following 1-2 teams still after the regular season ends on August 23rd. UPDATE: The FCL Pirates game was rained out today

Game Recap:

Adolfo Oviedo got the start and allowed two runs in three innings, with five hits and no walks or strikeouts. Reliever Greiber Mendez allowed one run in three innings and that was unearned. Hader Blanco tossed a scoreless seventh for his first career save in the 6-3 victory. The Pirates scored first in the first on a Daje Morales single. In the fifth, Delfin Ramirez and Isaac Paulino had RBI singles. A ground out in the seventh by Kelvin Diaz made it 4-3, then Robert De Paula doubled in two runs, with the second scoring on the play to get De Paula for the out between second and third.

Game Recap:

The Pirates Gold already have a playoff spot, but they continued to win on Monday, moving to 37-15 with a 2-1 victory in the seven-inning contest. Starter Victor Cabreja allowed the one run and left trailing in the game, then relievers Wilkin Valdez and Wilbur Martinez tossed three no-hit innings with five strikeouts. In the fifth inning, catcher Lennyn Nunez doubled. Two outs later, he moved to third base on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Juan Machado. He stole second base, then scored on a single by Wesley Zapata, with an error allowing the run to come in. The Pirates had just one other hit all game. Machado stole his 14th and 15th bases. John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
