Prospect Watch: Full Slate of Games, With Jared Jones, Johan Oviedo, Kyle Nicolas and Bubba Chandler on the Mound

Published:

It’s one of the few remaining full slates today.  TBD was a late scratch from several games.

The FCL Pirates were supposed to play two, but after a 20 minute shower the teams decided to take two hours off and play one seven-inning game.  Yesterday’s rainout will be made up tomorrow with a seven-inning game at Pirate City, starting at noon or 1pm or whenever.

The Pirates have added their 15th-round pick, first baseman Josiah Sightler to the FCL roster, but he’s listed as “injured – full season,” so we won’t be seeing him for a long time.

  • Eli Wilson 2-4
  • Francisco Acuna 2-4, 2B, HR (4), 4 RBI, SB
  • Domingo Gonzalez 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Game Recap:

Greensboro (46-61) blew leads in the ninth and tenth, losing to Rome, 6-5.  The Hoppers had a tough task early, as Rome sent out a rehabbing Mike Soroka.  He fanned the first five hitters he faced and eight of the first nine.  He left after four, one-hit innings.  Things got better after that, as Greensboro picked up ten hits.  Francisco Acuna had a big day, driving in four runs with his fourth home run of the year and a double.  He also stole a base.  Jacob Gonzalez had three hits and Eli Wilson two.  The Hoppers fanned 15 times and drew no walks.  Jared Jones had a good start, giving up two runs over five innings.  He walked none and fanned five, but he also hurt himself by hitting consecutive batters in the third.  Domingo Gonzalez followed with three scoreless innings.  Eddy Yean then blew up the game.  He lost a two-run lead in the ninth on a two-out walk and a pair of singles.  After the Hoppers got the free runner home in the top of the tenth, Yean allowed three hits in the bottom half, resulting in two runs and a loss.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Starting Pitcher: Bubba Chandler

  • Final Line: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Notable Performances:

  • Jack Brannigan 1-3, BB, SB

  • Norkis Marcos 2-3, 2B, HR (4), BB
  • Anthony Solometo 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Game Recap:

A couple weeks I suggested yinz should try to guess who’d get the next two-home-run game.  If you guessed Norkis Marcos, you should go to the racetrack now.  Marcos drove in three with his third and fourth dingerz of the year and Bradenton (57-51) shut out Tampa, 6-0.  Wyatt Hendrie had two singles and two RBIs.  Tres Gonzalez, Jack Brannigan and Tanner Tredaway also got into the game.  Gonzalez was 1-for-5, Brannigan was 1-for-3 with an RBI single, and Tredaway was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Bubba Chandler and Anthony Solometo combined on the shutout, going four innings and five, respectively.  They each gave up three hits.  Chandler walked one and struck out three.  Solometo walked nobody and fanned four.

Starting Pitcher: Bladimir Dotel

  • Final Line: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Notable Performances:

  • Javier Rivas 1-3, 2B
  • Derek Diamond 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
  • Ryan Velazquez 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
  • Elijah Birdsong 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

The FCL Pirates (28-20) got blanked by the Rays, 4-0.  The game started in a light rain, which gave Bladimir Dotel a lot of trouble and the ball appeared to be slipping out of his hand.  The game was stopped with two on in the bottom of the first, then was delayed for two hours after the rain stopped.  (The game also started half an hour late, for no apparent reason.  FCL games take place in their own odd corner of reality.)  Anyway, Dotel didn’t come back after the delay and one of his runners scored.  Joaquin Tejada gave up three in the second, two scoring after he left.  Several recent pickups made appearances.  Sixth-round pick Derek Diamond and non-drafted free agent Ryan Velazquez made their pro debuts, and 18th-rounder Elijah Birdsong made his second appearance.  Each worked a scoreless inning.  Velazquez’ inning was interesting.  He faced four batters and let three reach, on a hit and two walks.  Two of them, though, were caught stealing, including an attempted steal of home.  The offense just didn’t show.  A double by Javier Rivas was the only hit.  Termarr Johnson went 0-for-2 with a walk.

Game Recap:

The Black team (25-29) lost to the NYY Bombers, 3-2.  Each team had only three hits, but the Pirates’ pitchers walked ten in just seven innings.  Four different pitchers walked 2-3 batters each.  Starter Luis Joseph gave up one run, Lewys Guzman gave up an unearned run and Diego Chiquillo allowed the third run, costing him the loss.  The Pirates’ offense consisted of singles by Daje Morales, Angel Rodriguez and July Vittini, and two walks.  Nobody reached more than once.

Game Recap:

The Gold team (38-15) blanked the Mariners, 4-0, on one hit.  Starter Isaias Uribe fanned five over three innings, and gave up the only hit.  Yojeiry Osoria worked one inning and Luis C. Gonzalez finished the last three, striking out four.  The good guys had only four hits and got much of their offense from Yordany De Los Santos and Juan Machado.  De Los Santos had a double, a sac fly and a hit batsman, and drove in two.  Machado scored two on the strength of a single, a walk and a hit batsman.  Ruben Vizcaya had a single and a walk, and scored a run.  De Los Santos, Machado and Vizcaya each had a steal, their 11th, 16th and 13th, respectively.

Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
