Prospect Watch: Bubba Chandler’s Start for Bradenton Gets Rained Out; Pirates No-Hit the Pirates

A full schedule today, highlighted by Anthony Solometo starting for the Bradenton Marauders. This will be his sixth appearance. He has a 4.11 ERA in 15.1 innings, with 17 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP. Down in the DSL they are playing for bragging rights as the Black and Gold teams square off. Indianapolis has an early afternoon game. Missing pitchers will be filled in as they become available. UPDATE: Bubba Chandler is now starting for Bradenton. No word on whether or not Solometo will now follow or why the late change. UPDATE #2: After all of that, the game gets rained out. Doubleheader tomorrow.

Game Recap:

Indianapolis got roughed up in a quick game on Thursday afternoon. They had four hits, all of them singles, and no walks. A double play eliminated one of those runners and they had one at-bat all game with a runner in scoring position. Jerad Eickhoff had a solid outing, giving up two runs over six innings. John O’Reilly allowed five runs (four earned) in one inning, and Zach Matson tossed a scoreless eighth in the 7-0 loss.

Game Recap:

Aaron Shortridge made his fourth start for Altoona on Thursday and he went four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. He now has a 6.00 ERA in 12 innings with the Curve, and a 3.86 ERA in 21 innings for the season, including his time with Bradenton. Jeffrey Passantino allowed one run in two innings. Cristofer Melendez, who was recently demoted to Altoona, tossed two shutout innings. Tahnaj Thomas finished off the game with a scoreless ninth. He has a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings since June 1st. Altoona scored first on Aaron Shackelford’s 14th double, which drove in a run. He added his 15th double later in the game. Fabricio Macias doubled in a run in the third. Liover Peguero followed with a sacrifice fly. Blake Sabol hit a two-run homer, his tenth home run of the season. Andres Alvarez hit his 13th homer. Alvarez stole a base in the seventh, then scored on a wild pitch. He had two steals in the game, giving him 14 for the season. Macias capped the scoring in the 8-3 victory with his third double of the game. Matt Fraizer hit his sixth triple and scored two runs. Peguero added his 19th double.

Game Recap:

Greensboro won 6-5 on Thursday night. Starter Adrian Florencio allowed four runs in his three innings. The bullpen then allowed one run over six innings. Jack Carey, Cristian Charle, Eddy Yean and Dante Mendoza all tossed scoreless frames. Mendoza struck out three batters in his inning of work. Greensboro scored a run on a balk before going down 4-1 in the scoring. Endy Rodriguez doubled in the second run. Yoyner Fajardo’s single made it 4-3, then Abrahan Gutierrez hit a three-run homer, his sixth home run of the season. Rodriguez doubled twice to give him 20 on the season. Sammy Siani stole his 21st base. Fajardo picked up his 12th steal and Hudson Head stole his seventh base.

Starter Luigi Hernandez came into today with a 9.82 ERA and lowered it to 6.97 with a very impressive outing. He went three innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit, with no walks and seven strikeouts. He now has 18 strikeouts in 10.1 innings. Owen Sharts was out next and he continued to have a rough time as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery. He allowed three runs and now in six appearances, he has a 19.80 ERA and 16 walks in five innings. Jorge Ramos followed him strong with 1.2 scoreless and four strikeouts. Drew Irvine tossed two scoreless and Daniel Rivero threw shutout ball in the eighth and the game was completed early with a 7-4 Pirates win. The Pirates scored two runs early on a Rafael Escalante double. They added five in the eighth on single by Javier Rivas, a grounder by Escalante, a single by Omar Alfonzo and a Ronny Sanchez double. Shalin Polanco had two hits and scored two runs.

The Pirates Black got no-hit today by the Pirates Gold. The only two batters to reach base were Kelvin Diaz (walk) and Delfin Ramirez (HBP). That walk turned into an unearned run on a sacrifice fly and an error. Starter Jonathan Salazar allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings. Victor Cabreja allowed one run in 2.2 innings and struck out four batters. Luis Gonzalez allowed three runs in two innings.

Game Recap:

Keneth Quintanilla (3 IP) and Luis Faringthon (4 IP) no-hit the Pirates Black on Thursday. Faringthon faced one over the minimum, with three strikeouts and a hit batter. Quintanilla allowed a run on a walk, error and sacrifice fly. He now has a 2.50 ERA in 18 innings, while Faringthon has allowed one run in 18 innings for an 0.50 ERA. A wild pitch scored the first run in the 6-1 win. A sacrifice fly that turned into a double play, scored the second run. Pedro Figuereo doubled in the third run. A ground out scored the fourth run, a bases loaded walk made it 5-1, then Yordany De Los Santos brought in the final run. De Los Santos was the only player with two hits in the game. Eddy Rodriguez had two walks and two runs. Tony Blanco Jr. started in right field, but only played an inning before leaving for a defensive replacement. He went 0-for-1.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.
