P2Daily: Previewing This Week’s Pirates Minor League Opponents

Published:

With the weeks left in the season slowly diminishing, this is a week of opponent’s that really piqued my interest.

The Rochester Red Wings’ roster isn’t loaded with Washington Nationals Top 30 prospects, but the Indianapolis Indians will still get to see a couple high-end starters. Leading the way is Top 100 RHP Cade Cavalli who was the Nationals first found pick in 2020. Following in his footsteps is the Nationals 2020 second round pick Cole Henry.

This will likely be a make-or-break week for the Altoona Curve. They are within an arm’s reach of the second half division title (4.5 Games Back) and will be playing six games against one of the teams they’re trying to catch in the Bowie Baysox. As was the case a month ago when the two faced the Baysox bring a heavily loaded roster with Baltimore Orioles’ Top 30 prospects. 2021 5th overall pick and Top 100 prospect Colton Cowser headlines the club.

The Greensboro Grasshoppers are only five games back in their division, with three weeks left in their season. They’ll play seven games in six days against the Greenville Drive, who currently sit dead last in the second half standings for the South Atlantic League. The Drive’s roster bolsters one Top 100 prospect in Marcelo Mayer, a recent Top 100 prospect that has since slid off lists, Nick Yorke, and Boston Top 10 prospect that generated a lot of buzz leading up to the 2020 draft, Blaze Jordan. Mayer and Jordan are recent promotions while Yorke has spent the entirety of 2022 season in Greenville.

The Bradenton Marauders won’t face any Top 100 prospects this week, but head into a second half division title battle. The Marauders will play the Dunedin Blue Jays who sit only a half game back of Bradenton. The Toronto Blue Jays affiliate has six of the Blue Jays Top 15 prospects and six of their Top 30. One prospect I’ll point out is Cade Doughty who I personally wanted this most recent draft. Drafted out of LSU he currently has a 1.231 OPS in his first 10 games in the FSL.
