Indianapolis (39-41) got all of its runs in the third inning and went on to beat Iowa, 7-2. Carter Bins led off the inning with his fourth AAA home run. The rest of the runs scored with two outs. Cal Mitchell had an RBI double and Travis Swaggerty an RBI triple. The scoring finished with a two-run home run by Mason Martin, his 13th home run and just his second since May 29. Miguel Yajure had a strong start, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits and no walks. He fanned six. Four pitchers worked an inning each after that. Zach Matson, Joe Jacques and Matt Eckelman each had a 1-2-3 inning. Noe Toribio allowed the other run. Swaggerty had a double to go with the triple, Bligh Madris had a single and a triple, and Bins and Tucupita Marcano each had two hits.

Game Recap:
Altoona (40-39) lost the first game of its doubleheader with Akron, 8-3. Aaron Shortridge didn’t have a great start, giving up two runs in two innings, both scoring after he left the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the third. The Curve took the lead with three in the top of the fourth, but Brad Case, who’s mostly been very effective for Altoona, didn’t have a good day. He gave up five in the bottom of the fourth, four on a grand slam, plus another run in the fifth. The Curve never got much offense going, as they had only two hits, a double by Blake Sabol and a single by Matt Fraizer.
The Curve took game two, 6-5, in eight innings, after blowing a 5-1 lead. They went with a bullpen game, starting Austin Roberts, who allowed a run in two innings. Jeffrey Passantino replaced him and gave up four runs in the fourth to tie the game, 5-5. It stayed that way through the scheduled seven innings, as J.C. Flowers had a strong outing, working 3.2 shutout innings. He gave up just one hit and fanned five. Altoona managed to get the free runner home in the top of the eighth on a bases-loaded ground out by Jared Triolo. Tyler Samaniego stranded the free runner in the bottom half. Samaniego’s now appeared in a dozen games in AA. He had one wildly uncharacteristic breakdown, giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning, and otherwise he has yet to allow a run. On the offensive side, the Curve got a three-run bomb from Liover Peguero, his sixth longball of the season. Connor Scott had three hits, and Peguero, Andres Alvarez and Fabricio Macias each had two. Alvarez had a double for the only extra base hit aside from Peguero’s homer.

Greensboro (34-44) fell behind 2-0, then put up innings of three, five and six runs to win, 14-2. Jared Jones threw six and a third innings, allowing the two runs on five hits and three walks. He fanned six. Ricky DeVito worked the last two and two-thirds without giving up a hit. Dariel Lopez and Hudson Head had big games, with three hits apiece. Lopez reached four times in all, belted his 12th home run and drove in four. In seven July games he has a .985 OPS. Head hit his fifth longball. Eli Wilson reached three times and hit his third home run. Endy Rodriguez also reached three times. Francisco Acuna and Ernny Ordonez each had two hits.

Bradenton (37-41) took a 5-1 lead over Lakeland, fell behind 6-5, then put up two five-run innings to win, 15-9. The game was about as wild as it gets. The Marauders had 15 hits, six walks, and four steals, including Jase Bowen’s 19th, and benefited from nine (yes, n-i-n-e) Lakeland errors. Rodolfo Nolasco homered for the second straight game, his eighth of the year. He reached four times, including a double, and scored three runs. Maikol Escotto had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs, and stole a base. Tsung-Che Cheng had a walk, a single and his fourth home run. Deivis Nadal had a single, double and three RBIs. Norkis Marcos had a single and double. Greg Allen continued his rehab and went 1-for-4. Po-Yu Chen had yet another start that went south in a hurry. He got knocked out in the fourth, giving up four runs in that inning and five overall. He did strike out six. Johan Montero worked two and a third, giving up a run and getting the win. He struck out five, as the Marauders fanned 16 in all. Yoelvis Reyes got the last four outs, three on strikes, and left the bases loaded in the eighth.

The FCL Pirates (12-12) took a 7-0 lead and hung on to beat the Orioles, 7-5. Bubba Chandler started and still hasn’t allowed an earned run. The only baserunner in his four innings came on a walk. He fanned seven and nobody came close to a hit. Luigi Hernandez followed with three innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Hernandez also got a rare plate appearance for a pitcher, drawing a walk. Roelmy Garcia had a rough time in the eighth inning. He faced eight hitters; he struck out two, walked two, hit two and allowed two hits. All that amounted to four runs. Raydel Velette got the last four outs. The Pirates piled up eight hits, eight walks and four hit batters. Solomon Maguire had two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Esmerlyn Valdez had two hits and two RBIs, and also got hit by a pitch. Braylon Bishop drew two walks and left after fouling a ball off his foot. Javier Rivas reached base three times on a single and two hit batsmen. (Unless they get corrected at some point, the positions shown in the box score are all wrong. The only correct listing is Bishop as DH.)

Eduardo Oviedo and Wesley Zapata had the big hits, a two-run double and a two-run single, respectively. Starter Hader Blanco allowed three runs over four innings, although only two were earned. Alexis Torres got the win although he allowed two runs in three innings. Zapata had two hits. Ewry Espinal reached three times on a single, a walk and a hit batsman. Juan Machado had three hits, including a triple, and Axiel Plaz had two, including a double. Plaz is batting .455. Isaias Dipre connected for his second home run of the year. Jhonson Pena and Carlos Tirado each had doubles, and Tirado drove in two.
