It’s an early day today. Three of the four full-season teams get started by 1:35 PM today. Altoona has the only night game on the schedule. Greensboro originally had a makeup game scheduled for today, but that has been canceled because it won’t affect the first half playoff standings. The two DSL Pirates teams will be playing each other today. The FCL club is off. I’ll add in the Indianapolis pitcher when it becomes available today. It was supposed to be Jerad Eickhoff, but he will be starting for the Pirates.

Osvaldo Bido has been tough to hit in many of his outings this year, but his control has been poor, which has led to some rough results. We saw a little of both today with one hit in four innings and three walks, yet he kept the opposition off of the board. While he walked three batters, he threw a nice amount of strikes, with 42 of his 67 pitches going for strikes. He now has a 4.86 ERA in 50 innings, with 46 strikeouts. Joe Jacques threw shutout ball in the fifth. Zach Matson took over in the sixth and tossed two shutout frames. Hunter Stratton and Austin Brice had an inning each to close out the 2-0 win. Indianapolis got both of their runs on a Josh Bissonette double in the fourth. Five other players had one hit, all of them were singles. Josh VanMeter played on back-to-back days, today as the DH, so he probably won’t be on rehab long. He was 1-for-4.

Altoona lost 5-4 to New Hampshire on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth. That was after the Curve picked up two runs in the eighth to tie the score. Luis Ortiz had a solid start, with two runs over five innings and seven strikeouts. Three relievers followed with one run each, though Nick Dombkowski gave up an unearned run and Enmanuel Mejia put in two innings. JC Flowers gave up the winning run. The Curve got an RBI ground out from Aaron Shackelford, who was then on the back end of a double steal, with Jared Triolo picking up his 12th stolen base on a steal of home. Blake Sabol had an RBI ground out in the eighth, then Triolo hit a double for the fourth run. Lolo Sanchez had three hits in the game. Matt Gorski had a pinch-hit double and stole his seventh base since joining Altoona, and his 16th steal overall. Henry Davis was hit for the 16th time. He is just 2-for-30 since returning to Altoona earlier this month.

Justin Meis had two horrendous outings to start his time in Greensboro. He didn’t even get through one total inning between the two games, and his ERA coming into today was 108.00. He improved on that about as best as you could hope in one game, tossing six shutout frames on three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. That performance knocked a zero off of his ERA, now down to 10.80 in three games. Eddy Yean allowed two runs in the eighth, after throwing a scoreless seventh. Cameron Junker came in with no outs in the eighth and allowed one of two inherited runners to score. He finished off the 9-2 win in the ninth. Greensboro scored first on a Sammy Siani single in the second inning. They added four runs in the fifth on a single by Dariel Lopez and a three-run homer by Hudson Head, his third homer of the season. Lopez hit his ninth homer in the seventh inning to make it 6-0. Endy Rodriguez hit a double to make it 7-2 in the eighth, then Jacob Gonzalez capped the scoring with a two-run single. Siani had two hits and a walk. Yoyner Fajardo reached three times on two walks and a HBP. Rodriguez hit two doubles, giving him 12 on the year.

Bradenton had a morning start time on Wednesday and went down 2-0 to Dunedin in the first inning. From that point on, pitching and a little hitting led to a 4-2 victory. Starter Joelvis Del Rosario had a bit of a rough first, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, but he settled down from that point on, throwing five shutout innings the rest of the way on three hits and a walk. He now has a 3.33 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. Mitchell Miller threw two scoreless, then Dante Mendoza lowed his ERA to 1.54 with a scoreless ninth for his second save. The bottom of the order did some damage here, as Randy Romero and Jasiah Dixon each collected three hits and an RBI. Mike Jarvis and Tsung-Che Cheng each had two hits, while Jase Bowen brought in runs with a sacrifice fly and his 11th double. He was just named as our Player of the Week for last week.

Things started off poorly for the DSL Pirates Black against their fellow Pirates Gold team and they stayed worse until the seventh inning when they avoided a shutout. Pirates Gold put up multiple runs in all six innings in which they batted, handing the Black team a 19-4 defeat. Starter Luis Joseph was hurt by the defense, which led to six unearned runs in his 1.2 innings. Victor Cabreja got saddled with five earned runs in his two innings. Reyson Santos then put up six runs (five earned) in one inning. The towel was thrown in and infielder Delfin Ramirez ended up pitching better than the regular pitchers, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings. The offense was dead until the seventh when they scored runs on a Daje Morales triple, Ewry Espinal single, and RBI grounders by Rodolfo De La Cruz and Eduardo Oviedo. As mentioned above, the Gold dominated this game until the seventh and even that just turned a 19-run loss into a 15-run drubbing. Axiel Plaz, who was signed in part because his defense is outstanding for a 16-year-old, showed that he’s not just a glove-first player. He had two doubles, a triple, a homer and a walk, finishing with four runs scored and six RBIs. The big day pushed him to a 1.601 OPS for the young season. Yordany De Los Santos had two hits, including his third double. He also added his third steal. Roinny Aguiar had four hits, including his second double. Jhonson Pena and Eddy Rodriguez each hit their first homer. Rodriguez drove in three runs. Gustavo Armas had two hits, two RBIs, three runs, a walk and a stolen base. He also reached base a fourth time on a hit-by-pitch.
Starter Keneth Quintanilla tossed four scoreless innings on one hit, two walks and six strikeouts. Fares Sanchez, a recent signing, tossed his second straight two-inning shutout performance. Juan Fuentes got hit around in the seventh trying to mercifully end this game, so Alberto Saba had to record the final two outs.
