Statcast Heroes: Oneil Cruz, Rowdy Tellez, Paul Skenes, Nick Gonzales, Garret Forrester

Every Wednesday, I’ll be recapping the weekly Statcast leaders at each level of the Pittsburgh Pirates system that has data available. That includes the Major Leagues, Triple-A, and Single-A.

The results give a quick glimpse at players who stand out in a given week, with the chance to identify players who wouldn’t normally be discussed. As for the players who are normally discussed, this allows for a deeper dive into why they’re performing well.

The weekly leaders can be found at the bottom of the article, after five players who stood out in the last week.

Oneil Cruz With One of the Hardest Hits This Year

At 116.4 MPH, the double from Oneil Cruz last week was one of the hardest hit balls this year. The hit came in Thursday’s game against Milwaukee, as part of an active streak where Cruz has recorded a hit in each of his last seven starts. Since Cruz said he has lost his confidence, he has done a good job at the plate trying to get it back. He’s batting .333/.379/.407 in his last 29 plate appearances. With the Pirates struggling on offense, it would be great to see Cruz’s bat waking up.

Rowdy Tellez Hitting the Ball Hard

The Pirates added Rowdy Tellez as their first baseman this offseason, and it hasn’t gone well. He’s batting .198/.283/.259 with one homer in 92 plate appearances. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that he was hitting the ball hard over the last week, even if that only led to three hits. Tellez had two doubles on April 28th, including one that traveled 109 MPH. He had a 107.6 MPH single the day before. Tellez also had some hard and far hits that went for outs.

Two Starts From Paul Skenes

This week is the first week where top pitching prospect Paul Skenes is scheduled for two starts. He made his first one on Tuesday night, and will make his next start on Sunday. Since this article goes Wednesday-Tuesday, this was the first week where Skenes had two starts. As usual, he owned the top velocity section in Triple-A, with 15 pitches at 100.1 MPH or higher, getting up to 101.0 MPH.

P2Daily: Paul Skenes Goes Six, Pirates Complete a Trade

0
On Tuesday night, Paul Skenes threw six shutout frames in Indianapolis. The top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates system, and the best pitching prospect in the game, looks like he’s ready. As I wrote yesterday, I would expect Skenes to make at least one more start in Triple-A. He’s scheduled to start on Sunday in Triple-A, which would be his first two-start week, and first time pitching on four days rest. The start is also going to come against the same Buffalo team he just shut down across six innings. It will be interesting to see how they adjust to his approach. If that goes well, then Skenes will look ready, and will be in line for a potential May 10th debut in the majors. That said, it won’t matter how well he pitches as a starter if the Pirates maintain their offensive woes in the big leagues. Those offensive woes didn’t hit the minors, on a night of many home runs throughout the system. Check out the results in the Pirates Prospect Watch.

PIRATES LOSE TO ATHLETICS

The Pirates lost 5-2 to Oakland, and will now look to avoid the sweep on Wednesday. They got off to a good start, with a solo homer in the first from Connor Joe, who had two hits in the game. Ke’Bryan Hayes added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Mitch Keller allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Josh Fleming allowed two runs in two innings of work, and the offense couldn’t battle back. The Pirates have now dropped to 14-17 on the season, as their offensive struggles continue.

PIRATES COMPLETE BRUBAKER TRADE

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed their trade of JT Brubaker to the Yankees, acquiring infielder Keiner Delgado as the player to be named later. I wrote about the move to add Delgado, who will likely go to Bradenton to play for one of the two lowest level teams this year.

Pirates Prospect Watch: Paul Skenes Throws Six Shutout Innings

Paul Skenes looks ready for the big leagues, following a six shutout inning performance for Indianapolis on Tuesday night. The 2023 first overall pick threw 75 pitches, allowing four hits, one walk, and striking out seven. This was the first full stat line for Skenes, who had been limited in pitches and innings during his first five starts. It was also a very efficient outing for him, throwing 12.5 pitches per inning, after a lot of 20 pitch frames in his first starts of the year. Skenes threw his four-seam 29 times, averaging 99.8 MPH with the pitch, and topping out at 101.0 MPH. The pitch led to four whiffs and four called strikes for a 28% called and swinging strike rate (CSW%). His slider led to four whiffs on 12 swings, and four more called strikes for a 38% CSW. The splinker that he’s added this year had a 38% CSW, with two whiffs and four called strikes on the 95 MPH sinker/splitter. He also threw six changeups, getting one whiff on one swing, and he mixed in one curveball, which got the final out of the third inning. When Skenes finished his night, the score was tied 0-0. That changed in the bottom of the sixth, when Nick Gonzales homered, hitting his third of the season. Liover Peguero tripled in a run in the seventh, and Malcom Nunez knocked Peguero in with a single. With the score 3-0, Skenes was in line for the win. Carmen Mlodzinski came on for the save in the ninth, but allowed a three run homer after giving up hits to his first three batters. He was also saved from another run scoring on a throw by right fielder Gilberto Celestino that got a runner at home with one out. The game remained tied until Yasmani Grandal led off the bottom of the 11th with a single, scoring Gonzales from second for the 4-3 win. On the season, Skenes has video game numbers in Triple-A, with an 0.39 ERA in 23 innings, along with 41 strikeouts and an 0.87 WHIP. He’s scheduled for his next start on Sunday in Indianapolis, which would make this his first two-start week. Sunday would also be the first day he pitches on four days rest. If that goes well, I really don’t see what is holding him back. You can judge on the video below.

Pirates Acquire Keiner Delgado to Complete JT Brubaker Trade With the Yankees

0
The Pittsburgh Pirates completed their trade of JT Brubaker with the New York Yankees on Tuesday, receiving infielder Keiner Delgado as the player to be named later. Delgado was the 22nd best prospect in the Yankees system according to Baseball America pre-season rankings. The Yankees signed Delgado out of Venezuela in May 2021, and sent him to the Dominican Summer League for his debut in 2022. He batted .310/.504/.506 with three homers and 34 stolen bases. That was followed by a promotion to the US, where he hit .293/.414/.485 in the Florida Complex League, with eight homers and 36 steals. Delgado has yet to play a game in 2024, and could go to one of two destinations for the Pirates. They could promote him to Single-A Bradenton, giving him a look in more formal games against more advanced competition. They could also ease him into the system back at the FCL level, which starts in the next week. Currently in his age-20 season, Delgado looks like a promising lower level prospect, continuing a trend by the Pirates to trade for younger, unproven players who they can develop. He joins a group of promising hitters at the same level who the Pirates have acquired, including outfielder Estuar Suero (Rich Hill/Ji Man Choi trade) and infielder Jhonny Severino (Carlos Santana trade). Baseball America noted that Delgado rarely misses or chases with his swing decisions, while lacking impact. He profiles as a second baseman due to an average arm and fair range. Delgado grades as an above-average hitter, a plus runner, and an above-average fielder. If the Pirates can add some power to the profile, it would improve his stock. Next week on Pirates Prospects is the first update to the top 50 prospect rankings. At that point, I’ll have Delgado in the latest update. For now, my quick look is that he’s a top 30 guy in this system, and possibly a top 20 guy. Considering Brubaker was going to be limited to second-half innings this year, with one more season of control, this is a good return.

Williams: The Pirates Are Severely Lacking on Offense

0
Oneil Cruz said he was losing his confidence at the plate. The comment was made to reporters, including Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, following the game on April 21st. Cruz was batting .209/.261/.326 with a 40.2% strikeout rate at the time. Since those comments, Cruz has performed much better, with a .346/.393/.423 line and a 25% strikeout rate over the last week. The Pirates are relying on Cruz to be an impact hitter. He’s got one of the loudest bats in the system, with effortless power from a 6′ 7″ frame, and the ability to adjust and get to balls that most can’t reach — laying an extended power swing on those pitches. Cruz has yet to play a full season in the majors, so we don’t really have a feel for the type of hitter he can be, despite seeing all of his potential. In his combined time in the majors, the 25-year-old has a .238/.300/.426 line in 530 plate appearances, with 22 home runs and 16 stolen bases. If those were rookie numbers, they wouldn’t be bad, with the hope for more walks and hits to boost the power and speed production. Hitting is a game of confidence. The very best in the game fail to reach base 60% of the time, and fail to get a hit 70% of the time. I’d imagine for a hitter, it’s difficult to really feel the difference between failing to get a hit 70% of the time and failing 80% of the time. Sure, we can see the results by doing some math in the stat lines, but the player himself probably doesn’t notice the extra 1-2 hits per week in the sea of failure. The Pirates have had issues across the board with their offense. It’s not just Cruz who has struggled, but almost the entire team. Their offense ranks 24th in wOBA and 25th in wRC+. The hitting coach, Andy Haines, took over after the 2021 season, when the team ranked 28th/29th in those stats. The offense has not improved, and neither have the individuals.

Jared Jones is Having a Special Start to His MLB Career

What Jared Jones is doing right now is special. You don’t normally see a rookie arrive in the majors and look like one of the best players in the game. Through six starts, Jones has a 3.18 ERA, led by a 42:5 K/BB ratio. He’s had just one outing with an ERA over 5, which was his most recent start where he allowed three runs in five innings. The downside for Jones is that his Rookie of the Year case will see him competing against Cubs 30-year-old rookie Shota Imanaga, who led Nippon Professional Baseball in strikeouts last year. Imanaga has an 0.98 ERA in 27.2 innings this season. While Jones will have competition for Rookie of the Year, it’s a testament that his competition is someone with years of professional experience, even in another league. What stands out the most about Jones is his strikeout rate. He ranks sixth overall in K% at 31.8. His whiff rate of 37.5% ranks first in the majors. What’s impressive about that is he also ranks first in swing percentage. Not only is Jones inducing a lot of swings, but he’s also inducing a lot of misses.

Henry Davis Has Questions on Both Sides of His Game

The Pirates drafted Henry Davis first overall in 2021, in a move that served two purposes. The immediate decision to draft Davis, a power hitting catcher out of Louisville, came with the idea of adding a safe bat who might be able to hit for power behind the plate in the Majors. This would require Davis to stick at the catching position and maintain his power production. The bigger impact was the bonus pool savings Davis offered, which allowed the Pirates to go over-slot on middle round picks like prep pitchers Bubba Chandler and Anthony Solometo. Three years later, Davis is getting his shot at starting behind the plate in the big leagues, while Chandler and Solometo are at the Double-A level, pitching out of the rotation as top 100 prospects. The latter half of the reason to draft Davis looks promising. The dream of him being a power hitting catcher doesn’t look as realistic. Davis was a catcher in Louisville, but there have been concerns about his abilities behind the plate in pro ball. Those concerns continued through his minor league time, where Davis received very little work at catcher, and eventually was moved off the position. The Pirates have Endy Rodriguez, who is a much better defensive catcher, and with just as much offensive potential from a different hitting profile. Rodriguez went down for the season with an elbow injury, creating an opportunity for Davis. So far, that opportunity has confirmed that Davis can catch, but he grades out largely as a below-average catcher, per Baseball Savant ratings. Davis ranks 23rd out of 62 qualified catchers this season in blocking. That has been his standout ability, with results that grade slightly above-average. His framing has been well below average, ranking 49th out of 59 qualified catchers. One of the biggest reasons Davis is considered a catcher is due to his elite arm. He has a 1.89 pop time this year, which ranks seventh. However, his effectiveness at throwing out runners has led to him ranking 36th out of 59 qualified catchers in that stat. Aside from the arm strength, which has led to below-average results, the dream of Davis as a catcher relies on intangible reasons. Specifically, Davis fulfills the lore of a catcher who has a zero non-sense, authoritative approach in managing his pitching staff. This also leads to an interesting tendency that shows with Davis across the board: An unwavering approach to do things his way.

When Will Paul Skenes Arrive in the Majors?

Paul Skenes makes his next start tonight for the Indianapolis Indians. If it wasn’t for the lack of innings per outing, Skenes would probably be pitching in the majors tonight. The Pirates have been cautious with the 2023 number one overall pick, building up his workload slowly for the long MLB season. Skenes was described as a generational talent, and the best pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg. He had both Major League stuff and Major League mentality when he was drafted, and has looked like a Major Leaguer since his first pitch of the 2024 minor league season. After five starts, Skenes has an 0.53 ERA in 17 innings, with a 34:5 K/BB ratio. Aside from giving up just one earned run and striking out two batters per inning, Skenes is also routinely averaging triple-digits with his fastball, with a swing and miss slider that also grades as a plus offering. The Pirates are already seeing encouraging results from Jared Jones as a rookie. That raises the anticipation for Skenes. The question is when will he arrive, and also how many MLB innings will he have this season?

Jared Triolo Looks Like a Major Leaguer, But Not a Starter

In his first run through the Major Leagues last season, Jared Triolo hit for a .298 average, with a .785 OPS. These numbers were inflated, due to a .440 batting average on balls in play that would prove to be unsustainable. At the outset of the 2024 season, Triolo has gone to the other extreme. He’s hitting .214 with a .556 OPS. His BABIP is .263, which is on the unlucky side, and should improve. The question is whether it will improve enough for MLB starter quality offense? The Pirates have Triolo at second base this season, after the 26-year-old continued his BABIP-fueled hitting performance in Spring Training. Triolo can play all over the field, with minor league Gold Glove defense at third base, and the ability to even move to center field. Defensively, Triolo looks good at second, with a lot of big, run-saving plays. The advanced metrics back up his talent. He ranks third in the Majors defensive runs saved, and second to Jose Altuve in UZR/150. Triolo has justified his ability as a starter on the defensive side. Even on the lowest metrics, he grades out as average.
