P2Daily: The Bubba Chandler Hype Train Continues

Published:

Baseball is a long season, filled with ups and downs. I’ve found the best way to get through the long season is to try and stay as calm as possible. Player is on a hot streak? That’s fine, he’ll cool off. Not playing well? Law of averages says he’ll bounce back.

It’s hard not to get excited about Bubba Chandler right now, even though he is only a couple of months into his professional career. So far, everything that the Pirates have asked of him has been done, with a flair that only he seems capable of.

What the Pirates are doing with his development is uncharted waters, and they haven’t been shy about easing him into things.

He started off in the Florida Complex League to get some added side work done, but when he got on the field he showed that the competition wasn’t completely challenging him.

Chandler didn’t allow a run in 15 1/3 innings, and gave up only three hits while striking out 27. He walked 10 (5.87 BB/9), but he’s 19 and it’s a small sample size.

While there are a lot that think he will eventually focus completely on pitching, he’s been a lot better at the plate than expected. The power (three home runs) have been nice, but it’s the discipline he’s shown early that’s been more impressive, with Chandler walking (9) more than he’s striking out (6).

After moving up to Bradenton, it didn’t take him long to get things going at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double in his first plate appearance and followed that up with a single later on. He would go on to score both times he got on base.

He didn’t look out of place with the increase in competition. He even went the other way against the shift while batting left-handed for his second hit of the game.

Chandler last pitched on July 8th, and is expected to start on Thursday. It’ll probably be safe to say that we will have more updates on him once he does step on the mound.
