The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that infielder Mark Mathias has been claimed by the Seattle Mariners. He was designated for assignment a week ago when the Pirates claimed Andre Jackson off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Pirates acquired Mathias from the Texas Rangers in early March for a player to be named later. That turned out to be 24-year-old minor league reliever Ricky DeVito, who has a 13.50 ERA and 13 walks in ten innings this season over three levels of the minors, while also missing time.
Mathias had some good offensive stats in minimal big league time prior to this season, but things didn’t work out in his two trials with the Pirates. He hit .231/.355/.269 slash line in 52 plate appearances, while posting a -0.2 WAR due to poor defense.
With the call-ups of Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo recently, the Pirates decided to go with younger players over the 28-year-old Mathias, who now moves on to Seattle.
