Pirates Acquire RHP Andre Jackson from Dodgers; DFA Mark Mathias

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Andre Jackson from the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations. To make room on the full 40-man roster, infielder Mark Mathias has been designated for assignment.

Jackson has pitched briefly in the majors during each of the last three seasons. He has totaled just 39 innings over that time in 14 relief appearances. He has a 4.15 ERA, a 4.41 FIP, a 1.38 WHIP and a 35:13 SO/BB ratio.

Jackson’s time this year was not good for the Dodgers. He had a 6.62 ERA in 17.2 innings, giving up multiple runs in four of his seven appearances.

He has mostly struggled in Triple-A, posting an ERA of at least 5.00 in each of the last three seasons, while pitching in one of the better parks for pitchers in the Pacific Coast League (Oklahoma City). The caveat there is that the league ERA has also been over 5.00 each seasons, so he’s been average.

Jackson has been optioned to Indianapolis.

The 28-year-old Mathias was sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis six days ago. He has played 22 games for the Pirates this year, posting a .231/.355/.269 slash line in 52 plate appearances.
