Prospect Watch: Bubba Chandler’s Start for Bradenton Gets Rained Out; Pirates No-Hit the Pirates

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Game Time: 7:05pm

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Osvaldo Bido

  • Final Line: 4 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Notable Performances:

  • Greg Allen 3-5, HR (1)
  • Ji-Hwan Bae 0-3, 2 BB
  • Bligh Madris 1-3, BB

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (41-45) lost to Columbus, 9-7.  Osvaldo Bido and recently dfa’d Austin Brice had rough games.  Bido started and allowed five runs over four innings.  Brice allowed the other four and lasted only two-thirds of an inning.  Much of the offense came from a rehabbing Greg Allen.  He had three runs and two RBIs on three hits, including a home run.  The rest of the team managed just a Bligh Madris single and Carter Bins double, although they did draw seven walks.  Ji-Hwan Bae walked twice and scored twice.  The Indians fanned 15 times, with Mason Martin and Travis Swaggerty each going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

Starting Pitcher: Luis Ortiz

  • Final Line: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

Notable Performances:

  • Jared Triolo 1-3, 2 BB
  • Blake Sabol 1-4, HR (11)

  • Tyler Samaniego 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

Altoona (43-42) beat Richmond, 4-2.  Luis Ortiz had a good start, working four shutout innings, fanning six, and allowing just three hits and no walks.  He threw only 43 pitches, so it’s possible the Pirates are restricting his workload.  Nick Dombkowski threw the next four innings, giving up the two runs on solo homers and also fanning six.  Tyler Samaniego got the save with a scoreless ninth.  The runs all came via early longballs.  In the first, Blake Sabol and Aaron Shackelford went back-to-back, Sabols’ coming with one on.  In the third, Shackelford hit another.  He now has15 on the season and Sabol has 11.  Despite moving from home run heaven in Greensboro last year to a pitchers park this year, Shackelford has increased his OPS by 123 points and cut his K rate from 31.6% to 27.8%, while hitting dingerz at a higher rate.  Liover Peguero left the game after getting hit in the face by a pitch.  He seemed okay while walking off, but the x-rays will probably be the important story.

Game Recap:

Starting Pitcher: Bubba Chandler

  • Final Line: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Notable Performances:

  • Rodolfo Nolasco 2-4, 2B, HR (11)
  • Juan Jerez 1-2, BB
  • Anthony Solometo 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

Game Recap:

Bradenton (41-42) had its nine-game winning streak snapped by Jupiter, 4-3, in what was supposed to be the first game of a doubleheader.  The second game was rained out.  Bubba Chandler made his first full-season start and, after not allowing a run in the FCL, found the higher level more challenging.  He gave up a two-run home run in the first, allowed just one runner in the second, and then ran into trouble in the third.  He gave up two runs before Carlos Lomeli got the third out to leave the bases loaded.  Anthony Solometo followed and showed the advantage of being at the level a little longer.  He retired all twelve hitters he faced, fanning half of them.  He threw 34 of 49 pitches for strikes.  Rodolfo Nolasco continued to hammer the ball, getting a double and his eleventh home run of the year.  The latter was a monster blast, completely clearing the left-field grandstand.  Nolasco now has five longballs in his last six games and a 1.385 OPS in 11 July games.  The rest of the Marauders managed just three hits and four walks.

Starting Pitcher: Bladimir Dotel

  • Final Line: 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Notable Performances:

  • Enmanuel Terrero 1-4
  • Shalin Polanco 1-3, 2B, BB
  • Rafael Escalante 2-3, 2B, BB
  • Jesus Castillo 1-2, 2 BB, SB

Game Recap:

In a very rare FCL evening game, the Pirates (17-13) lost to the Orioles in walkoff fashion, 3-2.  The game ended quickly in the ninth as Kelvin Disla gave up a walk and a triple to start the inning.  Bladimir Dotel had a strong start, retiring the first ten hitters, but he lost the strike zone in the fourth inning.  One hit, two walks and a routine popup dropped by Javier Rivas cost him two unearned runs.  Ryan Harbin returned from the injured list to make his first appearance of the season with a 1-2-3 inning, and Jose Garces worked two scoreless innings.  The Pirates had lots of chances to score, but went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.  Rafael Escalante was the only player with two hits, a single and double.  Jesus Castillo scored one of the runs and drove in the other, picking up a single and two walks.  Shalin Polanco had a double and a walk.

Starting Pitcher: Brandison Polanco

  • Final Line: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 0 K

Notable Performances:

  • Richard Ramirez 2-4, 2B, BB
  • Eybert Escalona 3-5, HR (2)
  • Ewry Espinal 1-2, 2B, 3 BB

Game Recap:

The Black team (14-17) has been having some very Pirate-like games in which they get completely obliterated.  In this one, they fell behind the NYY Yankees in the second inning, 10-0, and went on to lose, 13-7.  The score only looked that respectable because the Pirates scored five times in the ninth.  Starter Brandison Polanco got only one out and allowed six runs.  Alexis Torres followed and gave up another four in an inning and a half.  Three more runs eventually added to the carnage before Yoerys Hernandez worked two scoreless innings at the end.  Most of the offense came from Eybert Escalona and Richard Ramirez.  Escalona had three hits, including a three-run home run, his second longball of the season.  Ramirez had a single, double and walk, and scored three times.  Ewry Espinal had a double and three walks.  Robert De Paula had a double, but he also struck out four times.

  • Isaias Dipre 2-5, 2B, HR (3), 5 RBI

Game Recap:

The Gold team (23-8) won a wild one, 15-9, over the Mets 1.  Ruben Vizcaya, Isaias Dipre and Juan Machado had very big days.  Vizcaya drove in four runs with a single and a double.  Dipre drove in five with a double and a three-run bomb, the latter his third homer on the season.  Machado reached base five times on two hits and three walks, and also stole three bases and scored three times.  Yorday De Los Santos and Carlos Tirado each had three hits, and Jhonson Pena had a triple and a walk, and three runs scored.  In all, the Pirates had 15 hits and ten walks, and went 10-for-19 with runners in scoring position.  The pitching was a bit less effective.  Starter Gilberto Alcala allowed three hits and three walks over two innings, but only one run.  The most effective pitcher on the day was Jesus Clode, who upped his record to 5-0 by by allowing just an unearned run in two innings.

He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
