Prospect Watch: Tony Blanco Jr Homers in Pro Debut

Last week we had a full schedule on Monday so the full-season teams could take advantage of the holiday and shoot off fireworks. No fireworks today, just the short-season teams in the morning/afternoon. We will fill in the starting pitchers and have the boxscores available to check as soon as they are available.

Game Recap:

The Pirates scored five late runs for a 7-6 win on Monday. Alessandro Ercolani allowed one run over three innings to give him a 1.96 ERA in six starts. Jose Garces allowed four runs in the fourth before leaving with two outs. Jorge Ramos gave up one run in 1.1 innings. Drew Irvine and Kevin Disla each threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts to finish the win. The Pirates trailed 6-0 going to the sixth inning. Solomon Maguire had an RBI ground out, then Esmerlyn Valdez singled in a run. Valdez had a sacrifice fly in the eighth that made it 6-3. Shalin Polanco singled in a run, then Javier Rivas doubled in a run, his sixth double. In the ninth, RBI singles by Jesus Castillo and Maguire gave the Pirates the lead. Castillo, Maguire and Rivas each had two hits. Castillo scored three runs. Jeral Toledo hit his fifth double.

Game Recap:

Aldolfo Oviedo put the Pirates down early and they couldn’t mount a comeback in their 9-6 loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings. Yoerys Hernandez tossed 2.2 scoreless, with four strikeouts. Luis Brito allowed one run and Greiber Mendez gave up two runs. The Pirates scored first on a first inning error. Daje Morales doubled in a run in the fifth. Wesley Zapata singled in Morales with the third run. Zapata pulled off a double steal with Isaac Paulino, with Zapata swiping home. Zapata brought in the fifth run with a sac fly, then the sixth run scored on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. The Pirates had five hits, nine walks and they went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Game Recap:

Andres Silvera has been the best pitcher for the DSL Pirates this year and that continued on Monday with 3.2 shutout innings on one hit and five strikeouts. He now has an 0.74 ERA, an 0.62 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 24.1 innings over six starts. Alberto Saba threw 1.1 scoreless, then Wilkin Valdez followed with three scoreless on one hit. Dermis Ordonez finished out the 13-0 win over the Yankees.

Tony Blanco Jr, who signed for $900,000 in January and has 40+ homer potential according to multiple scouts, played his first pro game today and he homered. He was the DH and went 2-for-3 with a single, homer and three RBIs.

This game was scoreless until the fifth when the Pirates broke it open in a big way. Blanco started the scoring with a two-run homer. Yordany De Los Santos cleared the bases with a three-run double, his seventh double of the season. It was 7-0 after an error scored two, then Blanco singled in a run. The Pirates scored four times in the sixth on no hits, with a walk, HBP, walk and error bringing in the runs. De Los Santos added an RBI single for the 13th run.
