The Pirates begin a short, two-game series against the Yankees, before heading on to a very long road trip.
They travel to Cincinnati on Thursday for a doubleheader. That is followed by three games in Milwaukee, four games in Miami, and three games in Colorado — without a single day off until the All-Star break. I guess the schedule makers decided the Pirates should suffer leading up to the break.
Jose Quintana (1-4, 3.43) will kick it off against former Bucco, Jameson Taillon (9-1, 3.32).
I imagine there will be a tribute video, as there should be, unlike some of the recently departed players they created a montage for.
YANKEES @ PIRATES
Time: 7:05 PM EST
Pirates Starter: Jose Quintana, (1-4, 3.43)
Yankees Starter: Jameson Taillon, (9-1, 3.32)
Quintana notes: Quintana closed out June with an 0-2 record, and 4.80 ERA. He gave up 5 home runs in the month, all in two games to Atlanta and San Francisco. In his final two starts, he threw 12 innings, allowing only three earned runs, with three walks and 12 strikeouts against the Cubs and Nationals.

It’s fun when the stadium is packed and they play like that. Can’t wait until they are actually in the hunt with a crowd like this. They are 6-1 against dodgers and Yankees. What a bizarre team.
That’s a crazy as hell stat my man.
It really is. It makes no sense, I really think if they managed the roster and managed games to win they could be hovering around .500. But what do I know.
Sit down, Judge…and ALL RISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
I know its only one game, but this darned team keeps finding ways to show me some hope
Doesn’t look like Underdog is ready for the big moments right now.
I had the same feeling, as if pitching in the 8th and/or the Yankees put extra pressure, hopefully is a learning experience.
But close, lol.
Effectively wild
Watching this game, i have a feeling that we will be losing reynolds either this deadline or in the offseason… but if done right that trade could nearly ensure a playoff appearance within 2 years after, just my gut feeling right now
That’s the way to build a winner all right. Spend time developing prospects into the kind of player every team wants then trade him away for more hope and dream prospects. That’ll work.
Just don’t think the franchise has the courage to do it, but would love to be wrong.
He could be a valuable trade chip in three weeks. You’re right, he might be the kind of trade chip that brings you a couple major pieces to the puzzle.
Phew! Love to see it!
Pitchers best friend, baby!!!
Here we go again. Bullpen gonna blow another fun night. Crowe struggles to go more than one and Shelton doesn’t care.
He got out of it! Shelton knows what he’s doing…
Here we go.
Getting Sheltoned again…
GREAT team AB by Cruz!!
Vets on expiring contracts, let’s go!!!
Which, I completely forgot, again, that Vogey has a $1.5M club option next year, and (according to Ethan’s list, I believe) a year of arb after that.
Alternatively, he hits a few more dingers down the stretch and we flip him to a team that needs a LH bench bat
My first thought was flip him for what you can get, but his track record makes it difficult to value if it’s worth keeping him if he doesn’t get decent value, given his track record.
Huh…lol
Word salad lol but, he’s currently a 781 OPS hitter with 2.5 years of control. One of those years is a $1.5M club option. Would a team give a nice return for a very cheap 781 OPS hitter with 2.5 years of control? Or would they see that he’s only had one year (2019) that mimics his current pace, and be reluctant to give anything of significant value?
Carlos Santana was pricey and only controlled through this season, but if the return would mimic what he brought back, I’d probably just hold on to him with the thought of running him out as our DH next year, at only $1.5M
Double wow, I didn’t realize Vogey has 2.5 years of control left and that you mention a player named Carlos Santana the day the rock legend Carlos Santana collapsed on stage. I guess many Latino’s are proud to name their son’s after him and I can’t say that I blame them.
I keep forgetting that Vogey has that option, and then I didn’t know he had the Arb 3 year till I looked it up lol
I also hadn’t heard about musician Carlos Santana. That’s awful
He appears to be okay and they attributed it to heat stroke. I’m six years younger and I don’t do heat well either, lol.
Tsutsugo says the real Yoshi is here
This outfielders playing the outfield seems like its working so far.
Def rad
I like the Underwood/Beede tandem better than the Crowe/Dejong, but let’s hope the shut it down.
Happy Crowe Day Y’all

Quintana’s trade price just went up Red Sox Nation!
A smart GM trades Quintana for the best he can get and then signs him to a two year deal over the winter.
I like the idea of, “Hey, Q. We’re gonna trade you for assets, then bring you back in off-season. Cool beans? Cool beans”.
I have been thinking this. I can see him taking a reasonable multiyear deal laden with incentives that will hit if hes good
Judge has video game numbers : .280 BA, 29 HR… Agh. That feels like a Hayes ball there. But I think I’m just spoiled by his defense.
You’re starting to see the impact of 8 lefties vs a righty in pnc.
Seriously.
Maybe the Yankees should have studied up on the Dodgers series.
They started to study but said we are just plain better than the Dodgers so nothing to worry about………and quit studying…….
Jack’s power is truly impressive
Taillon’s expression was hilarious. Like, Jack WHO??
TEAM THE BEST TEAM
THAT is why he bats THIRD
You can’t fool the Fat Man!
2 minutes before game time… I threw Quintana into my fantasy lineup.
Looks good so far!
Also started Gleyber Torres and Reynolds 🙂
As a big fan of Pirates Prospects, I hope Quintana and Reynolds have monster games tonight and both have a great month of July. Let them look so good GM’s will give away far more than they should to acquire both of them. We need some new, young talent to get excited about. Load up the boat with prospects if the owner won’t pay for talent.
And trade Hayes, Cruz, Burrows and Davis. Just keep on trading for minor leaguers because that’s what they have done for the last 20yrs or so and we see how that’s worked out.
Quintana is probably as good as gone. Idk if anyone will be willing, or desperate, enough to give up what is Reynolds presumed price.
As a Chang fan due to being a Taiwanese baseball fan, I’m glad to see that the smartest organization in MLB has picked him up.
He’ll probably hit .300 and turn the Rays into the Chang Gang
He had a very good second half last year, so it’s possible.
He hits it hard, when he hits it. But seems he gets under it too much, with a LA 10 pts over league average: 22.1 vs 12.1
When does Banuelos have to be added? Or did I miss it?
IIRC, he gets something like three days to report.
Rays claimed Yu Chang.
I can already hear the Rays Fans……………..they are using their best Nancy Kerrigan voice and screaming WHY???? WHY??????
Always interesting when a team with a knack of finding undervalued talent claims a player from us.
“And the Rays win the World Series in game 7 from a walk-off Yu Chang grand slam!!”
Is that you Biff??? Dang you and your Grays Sports Almanac!
Newman is back???
Sounds like at least Yoshi and Gamel are.
They reinstated Gamel and Yoshi, and optioned Park and Marcano. They’re getting the band back together, reforming that exciting team they started the year with.
No Newman yet.
Heineman on paternity leave, Delay brought up.
Is the band your’e referring to the Killers? As in rally.
Guns N Losses
Journey(men)
Maroon 9
The Kinks
Earth Wind & Dire
Clearance Clearwater Spiral
thank you I’ll be @ Chuckles in Poughkeepsie all week
The last two, especially, are brilliant.
Probably Rolling Stones. With how Mick Jagger somehow withstands every possible drug or item one shouldn’t put into the body, yet he keeps waking up a day older.
All that stuff that entered Mick & Keith’s bodies for all of those years is probably what is actually keeping them alive. The both actually died several years ago but all the drugs won’t let their bodies quit yet. 😱
For sure. You can include Keith Richards as well.
Uh, that band hits some sour notes, when they hit’em at all.
The good news will be that Taillon can’t keep the Pirates hitters in the park. The bad news will be the same goes for Quintana. But a good game from Quintana and there could be some suitors bearing gifts for Mr. Quintana’s services.
The next 4 games “should” be very entertaining. Two against the mighty Yankees……we’ve already shown we can dominate the NL’s best team…….why not sweep the AL’s best team too!? And then good timing for 2 at GABP, we are in good form for hitting HR’s in that band box. Let’s keep Yoshi and Newman down for 4 more games, let the kids play.
FO is probably thinking, “Lets activate them for Reds series, so they can boost their numbers in Cincy, and regain value!” lol
Not sure where I got this idea, but I thought they were going to activate Gamel and Yoshi for the Yankee series on purpose.
I’m not worried about the Yankees. When you are a Pirate fan long enough not much surprises you. And being a 7 year old during the Pirates 1960 WS if the Pirates manage a win in these two games it might be a 7-6 score but the losses most likely will be double digits.
What I would do. 7/5 edition.
1) Add Banuelos because they have to, option C Vieaux to AAA after serving as 27th man on Thurs.
2) When Newman is ready, send D Castillo down for a little more playing time/seasoning.
3) When Gamel is ready, DFA J Van Meter
4) When Tsutsugo is ready, option H Park to AAA
5) When Peters is ready, option A Brice to AAA
6) Look to trade Gamel, Vogelbach, Newman, Quintana, Stratton, and Crowe, if you can get anything for them. Quintana is the only one with any real value. The others would get a low level suspect at best.
7) Listen to offers for Reynolds and Bednar, but I’d have to be blown away.
I’d option Marcano. He’s reverted fully back to his weak contact ways.
Bullpen starting to feel the brunt of the poor rotation. If they win five of the 14 till the break I’ll be surprised. Even though they’re not playing anyone good on the road other than Milwaukee, young teams are awful on the road.
Yes, our road record is terrible. That makes this stretch so tough but also a chance to show some growth.
How many RP arms are going to fall off during this road trip???
Only one that matters.
This tough stretch between now and the All Star break will tell us a lot about how much progress they’re making.
Yeah, I looked at the upcoming schedule and audibly said, “Ouch”. Kicking it off with a double header is tough. Then just the way they set up the travel seemed a little bizarre
From Milwaukee to Colorado to Miami would’ve made some sense, not Milwaukee to Miami to Colorado.
.405 winning percentage against a .368 BaseRuns record.
Tracking a few wins worse than projections estimated heading into the year.
Dog days will really test their depth, or else this could get uglier before it gets pretty.
Looking forward to seeing Taillon pitch. Hope our guys beat up on him LOL.
