Singh Wins First Aussie Game
An Australian double header early on Friday morning:
Game One: Canberra Cavalry 3, Adelaide Bite 1
Pirate farmhand Rinku Singh earned his first win for the Cavalry, in a pitching-dominated game. Former Altoona Curve pitcher Paul Mildren pitched the entire (7 inning) game for the Bite. He allowed only one hit over the first three innings, and another single in the 4th. Mildren got out of a jam in the 5th -- a walk and a double put two runners into scoring position with one out. The next batter tapped one back to the mound, and Mildren returned the ball to his catcher, who tagged the lead runner out at the plate. A pop out ended the inning. But in the bottom of the 6th, Mildren gave up a double, an intentional walk, and another double, which brought in 2 runs. Two more singles added a third run for the Cavalry.
The Bite were also scoreless in all but their last at-bat. They put runners on base in every inning, but could not bring them around to score. LF Quincy Latimore led off the 4th inning with a single, then moved to second base on a wild pitch. He got to third on an error, but was left there when the inning ended. The Bite also left two runners on base in the 5th inning. In the 6th, back-to-back singles put two Bite runners on base with one out. The Cavalry made a pitching change, bringing in Rinku Singh. Singh ended the inning with a strikeout and a ground out, stranding the two runners. Singh came out to begin the 7th inning with a 3-run lead (and so was the pitcher of record, to get the win). He gave up a walk, then got a strikeout. A fielding error and a single by Latimore loaded the bases, and Singh was replaced. The new pitcher, Chris Morgan, walked the first batter he faced, forcing in the Bite's only run of the game, but then got a double play to end it.
Game Two: Cavalry 11, Bite 6
Latimore also had two hits in this game, but the Bite's 5-run 7th inning couldn't stand up to their total meltdown in the bottom of the 5th, when the Cavalry scored all 11 of their runs. The night-cap began like the first game, with pitchers in control. The Bite had only two hits and a walk scattered over their first 5 innings, though one of the hits was a solo homer by DH Brandon Bantz in the 4th. The Bite pitching allowed only 2 hits to Canberra over their first four innings. Then came the bottom of the 5th: walk, single, throwing error (2 runs), triple (run #3), double (#4), walk, missed catch error to load the bases, single (#5,6), single, single (#7), double (#8), wild pitch (#9), walk, triple (#10, 11), then finally, a ground out and a pop out to end the inning. Oh, and both of those triples were by pinch-hitter Donald Lutz, who came out of the game after that inning.
Latimore doubled with two outs in the 6th, but got no further. The Bite rallied in the 7th, but weren't even close to catching up. With one out, three consecutive singles brought in one run, then a walk loaded the bases. A double drove in two runs, then Latimore brought in the fourth run by beating out an infield hit to short. Another single added run #5, but that was all they could get.
The same two teams play another double header on Saturday.
Claggett Wins Again; Singh Reappears
A few signing notes for some former Pirates -- LHP Phil Dumatrait has signed a minor league contract with the Twins, and LHP Neal Cotts has signed a minor league contract with the Yankees. OF Rajai Davis was traded from the A's to the Blue Jays.
Sunday's winter league action involving a few Pirates' players and friends:
DOMINICAN LEAGUE
Aguilas Cibaenas 12, Tigres del Licey 1 -- A 6-run 1st inning put the game into Los Aguilas' pocket right from the start. Starling Marte came into the game in the 5th inning as a pinch runner (he didn't score), then remained in the game in left field. He flied out in the 7th, then hit an RBI single in the 8th. Denny Bautista was one of the few Licey pitchers who held Los Aguilas scoreless, as he threw a perfect top of the 9th for Los Tigres. Indy area native Jake Fox went 0-for-4 for Los Tigres.
VENEZUELAN LEAGUE
Tiburones de La Guaira 6, Tigres de Aragua 2 -- Los Tiburones scored 5 runs over the first 3 innings, and Los Tigres could only manage 2 runs. In the top of the 1st, SS Ronny Cedeno followed a lead-off single with a sacrifice bunt, then another single brought in the first Aragua run. Their second run came in the 6th inning, when Cedeno led off with a double into left field, and a few minutes later, 1B Hector Gimenez doubled into right field, bringing in Cedeno. C Miguel Perez came in as a defensive replacement behind the plate, but flied out in his only plate appearance. CF Jorge Cortes went 0-for-3 with a walk. Former Pirate pitcher Chris Hernandez pitched the top of the 9th for La Guaira. He gave up a walk, but then got Cortes to bounce into a double play to end the game.
Cardenales de Lara 7, Navegantes del Magallanes 2 -- Los Navegantes were also only able to put up 2 runs, one in the 2nd, and one in the 7th. SS Argenis Diaz contributed one of Los Navegantes' 5 hits, but he did not score. Corey Hamman pitched the 7th inning for Magallanes, and he gave up a solo home run.
Bravos de Margarita 2, Aguilas de Zulia 1 -- Anthony Claggett won his second game in two days for Los Bravos, this time with one scoreless inning of work (it was 1.1 innings yesterday). Los Bravos scored one run in the bottom of the 4th on a double, a single, and a grounder. Los Aguilas tied the score in the top of the 6th, also with a single and a double. Claggett took the mound to begin the 7th. He gave up a lead-off single, then retired the next three batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, Los Bravos scored the go-ahead run on a single, a bunt, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. That made Claggett the pitcher of record. Ronald Belisario pitched a perfect 9th inning for Margarita to collect his 10th save of the season.
Latimore And Adelaide Bite Win Second Game
Adelaide Bite 7, Melbourne Aces 4
LF Quincy Latimore started the 5th-inning rally for the Bite by being hit by a pitch, then scored when DH Ben Wigmore hit his second homer in two games. The Bite defeated Melbourne for the second time, again taking advantage of Melbourne's errors.
The Aces got out to a better start than in their first game, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, to take a 3-0 lead. A walk, a single, and a pair of doubles did the damage. But the Adelaide starting pitcher Darren Fidge chomped down after that inning, and did not allow another hit over his remaining 6 innings. He allowed only two batters to reach base, both on walks. One of those was thrown out trying to steal second base, and the other was picked off first by Fidge. He retired the last 10 batters he faced, and struck out the side in the 8th (7 total strikeouts). The Aces had two hits in the 9th, after Fidge was relieved -- a solo homer followed by a single.
The Bite got onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the 3rd inning. A fielding error and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second base, then an RBI double brought in the first run. A wild pitch let the runner score from second base. In the 4th, Wigmore reached base on a fielding error, then two singles loaded the bases. A walk forced in Wigmore, and an RBI single plated two more runs, to give Adelaide the lead. Wigmore's homer in the 5th gave the Bite more insurance.
Latimore went 0-for-3 in his other plate appearances.

Two other Pirates' players have been listed as "reassigned" by their Australian teams: pitcher Rinku Singh was "reassigned" by the Canberra Cavalry, and pitcher Jarryd Sullivan was reassigned by the Sydney Blue Sox. It sounds like "reassigned" might be a polite term for "cut". It's not like they have a big minor league system to reassign them to.
Australians’ New League; Cedeno and Milledge Do Some Hitting
The Australians are beginning their third iteration of the Australian Baseball League this weekend. The Aussies have had two leagues before -- both had to shut down due to financial issues. This time, the ABL is going to be a partnership between MLB and the Australian Baseball Federation. MLB has been sponsoring the Australian Academy Program since 2001, and several Pirates' farmhands (Jarryd Sullivan, Mitch Fienemann) have participated. This academy works with young Australian and Asian players, similar to the work done by the Dominican and other Caribbean academies.
The new ABL has six teams: the Adelaide Bite (think: shark), the Brisbane Bandits, the Canberra Cavalry, the Melbourne Aces, the Perth Heat, and the Sydney Blue Sox. The season will run into January, with each team playing 40 games. Of course Australian players will be featured, but there are some other "imports" as well. Here's the official ABL site, and you can see the resemblance to many other US minor league sites.
The good news: some Pirates' farmhands are going to be playing
Adelaide Bite: RHP Mitch Fienemann, LHP Paul Mildren (former Altoona Curve), C Dylan Child, OF Quincy Latimore; the team manager is Pirate international scout Tony Harris. Also on the team is a second baseman named Dayle Child.... I'm guessing he's Dylan's brother, but I've not confirmed it. The Bite play their first game on Thursday.
Canberra Cavalry: LHP Rinku Singh
Sydney Blue Sox: RHP Jarryd Sullivan
The Calvalry and Blue Sox open on Saturday Nov 6th at 7:30 AEST in Sydney... which is 4:30 am EST in the US, as best as I can tell. (I will not be up.)

And on to Friday evening's winter league games:
Marauders Clinch Playoff Spot
On Friday night, all of the Pirates' minor league affiliates lost. On Saturday night, all but State College won....
Bradenton Marauders 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 2 ... (box)
The Marauders assured themselves at least a spot in the playoffs with this win tonight. Nate Adcock won his 11th game of the season with 2 runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st, with a 2-out walk, a wild pitch, and two singles. He surrendered another run on a walk and a double to lead off the 3rd inning. He scattered 4 more hits, but left two stranded and erased two with double plays. In the top of the 6th, Adcock got two outs and gave up a single, then that runner stole both second and third base. He was relieved by Kyle McPherson, who finished that inning with a strikeout, then gave up just one hit over the next 2 innings, including 3 more strikeouts. Noah Krol earned his league-leading 34th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning, working around a missed catch error.
Bradenton picked up one run in the 2nd inning, when C Eric Fryer singled, then moved to second base on a groundout. 3B Adam Davis' RBI single brought in Fryer. The Marauders were on the receiving end of several walks over the next few innings -- one in the 3rd to SS Shelby Ford, one in the 4th to Fryer, three in the 5th to DH Jordan Newton, 2B James Skelton, and RF Robbie Grossman to load the bases -- but all were left on base. They did score again in the 6th, when LF Quincy Latimore led off with a single. He was forced out at second on Fryer's grounder, leaving Fryer at first. Davis singled again, advancing Fryer to third bse, then Newton doubled in both Fryer and Davis, to take a 3-2 lead. They added an insurance run in the 4th. Grossman singled with one out, then scored on CF Starling Marte's double. The Marauders threatened again in the 8th, as Davis was hit by a pitch and Newton walked, then Skelton bunted them both into scoring position. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning, but it turned out to not matter, and the Marauders season is going to continue beyond the weekend.

Curve Shut Out; Power Over-powering
Monday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates....
Bowie Baysox 2, Altoona Curve 0 .. (box)
The Curve out-hit the Baysox 7-5, but were still shutout in Bowie. 3B Josh Harrison and RF Miles Durham each had two hits, including a double for Harrison, while 2B Chase d'Arnaud, 1B Matt Hague, and LF Jim Negrych had one hit each. Harrison's double was the only extra-base hit for the Curve. In addition, Negrych walked three times, and two Curve batters, C Kris Watts and pinch-hitter Jose De Los Santos, were hit by pitches. That all adds up to 10 Curve batters left on base.
The Curve had two runners on in the 3rd inning, when d'Arnaud singled and Harrison doubled, sending d'Arnaud to third with two outs. A strikeout ended that inning. Two Curve were on base in the 4th also, when Negrych walked for the second time and Durham singled, but Negrych was picked off second base. In the 8th, Hague singled and Negrych walked for the third time, but again a strikeout ended the inning. The Curve's best chance at scoring came in the 7th inning, when they loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Negrych and Durham, and then Watts was hit by a pitch. A strikeout and a fly out ended that inning with all three runners still on base.
Justin Wilson suffered the loss. He threw 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, but with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. Bowie scored their first run in the bottom of the 1st without needing a hit: a walk, a ground out, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly. A single and a double brought in their second run in the 3rd. Mike Colla pitched the last 3 innings for the Curve. He gave up only one hit, a double in the 7th, and retired the other 9 batters he faced, including 3 strikeouts.
Gonzalez’s Walk-Off Homer, Krol’s 30th Save
A busy Friday for the Pirates' minor league affiliates:

Bradenton Marauders 5, Jupiter Hammerheads 3 (box)
The Marauders posted 14 hits, with each member of the line-up collecting at least one. C Eric Fryer had a perfect 4-for-4 night, with all four hits singles. SS Greg Picart had 2 singles, and LF Quincy Latimore doubled and homered. They scored only 5 runs on those 14 hits, though, leaving 13 runners on base.
Bradenton began scoring in the 2nd inning, on Fryer's first single and an RBI double by 1B Calvin Anderson. Latimore's double and a single by DH Jeremy Farrell to score Latimore added another run in the 3rd. Latimore's home run over the left field wall made it 3-0 in the 5th inning. The Marauders took advantage of an error by the Hammerheads to score agin in the 6th. With one out, Greg Picart singled and 2B Shelby Ford reached on a fielding error in left field, which let the speedy Picart score from first base. Ford went to third base on the error, and he scored on RF Robbie Grossman's RBI single.
Nate Baker earned his 2nd win with the Marauders, going 6 shutout innings and allowing only 2 hits, with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Three of those walks came in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Baker got out of that bases-loaded jam with a pop out and two fly outs. He had two more runners in scoring position in the 2nd, with a walk and a double, but got out of that jam too. The other single he allowed came with two outs in the 3rd. After that single, Baker retired the next 10 batters he faced, to finish his night.
Craig Hansen came on in relief of Baker to begin the 7th. He kept Jupiter from scoring in the 7th, despite two runners in scoring position from a hit batter, a single, and a wild pitch. The Hammerheads' only runs came in the 8th, and only one of the three runs was earned. A double and two walks loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly brought in the earned run. After a second out, Hansen was relieved by Duke Welker. The first batter Welker faced took a ball into center field, but an error by CF Starling Marte caused two unearned runs to score. Welker finished that inning with a line out to short.
Noah Krol earned his 30th save of the season with a perfect 9th inning. He leads the Florida State League in saves -- #2 has 28 saves and #3 has 21 saves. How many saves do you need to have before you get promoted?

Marauders Blast Cardinals, Power Split DoubleHeader
A little lighter schedule in the Pirates' lower minor leagues tonight -- the Altoona Curve and the State College Spikes both had scheduled days off.
The Pirates have signed their top two draft picks, righty pitchers Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, just a few hours before the midnight deadline. That makes 27 of 50 draft picks signed. Check out the complete list here.
Bradenton Marauders 9, Palm Beach Cardinals 1 (box)
The Marauders posted 12 hits and scored in each of their last three at-bats as they bombarded the Cardinals. 3B Jeremy Farrell led the charge with 3 hits, while SS Shelby Ford and C Eric Fryer had 2 hits and 2 RBI each.
Starter Brian Leach earned his 6th win of the season with 5 innings of work, in which he allowed only one unearned run, on 6 hits and a walk, while striking out 5 batters. He worked around a hit in each of the first two innings, and then got out of a small jam after two singles in the 4th by striking out the next 2 batters. The 5th inning began with a batter reaching on a fielding error by Farrell. A single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases. Leach's only walk of the game forced in the unearned run.
The Marauders also picked up an unearned run, which came in the 3rd. 2B Adam Davis doubled, then scored when DH James Skelton's bunt was complicated by a throwing error on the Cardinals' pitcher. They scored again (earned this time) in the next inning, when LF Quincy Latimore led off with a walk, followed by Farrell's ground rule double and Fryer's RBI single.
The Marauders broke the game open with 4 runs in the 6th. Latimore again led off with a walk, and Farrell singled. Fryer moved them up a base each with a sacrifice bunt. 1B Calvin Anderson singled, scoring both Latimore and Farrell. Davis walked, then a throwing error laoded the bases again. This time it was Ford's single which brought in two runs, Anderson and Davis, and the Marauders had a 6-1 lead.
Latimore led off an inning with a walk for the third time in the 7th inning. That was followed by singles from both Farrell and Fryer, driving in Latimore with the Marauders' 7th run. In the 8th, Skelton had a turn at leading off an inning with a walk. Ford singled, but he was out at second on RF Robbie Grossman's grounder force out. Back-to-back doubles by CF Starling Marte and Latimore brought in Skelton and Grossman, though Marte was out at the plate trying to score on Latimore's double.
Duke Welker pitched 2 scoreless and hitless innings for the Marauders, allowing just 2 walks. Craig Hansen also went 2 innings, with a hit batter in the 8th, and a single in the 9th. The single was followed by a game-ending double play.
Jakubauskas Begins Rehab (Again); Power Get Over-Powered
Action for the Pirates' lower minor affiliates on Tuesday... The Bradenton Marauders were rained out. They'll play a double header against Palm Beach today.

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Pirates 0 (box)
The Phillies dominated the Pirates for the second day in a row, adding 12 hits today to their 19 hits yesterday. Righty pitcher Chris Jakubauskas made his first appearance in a game in months but suffered the loss with a 3-inning start for the Pirates. He gave up one run on 3 hits and 2 walks. The run scored in the 3rd inning. on a single, a wild pitch and an RBI ground out. Kevin Kleis also gave up one run in his 2 innings of work, on two singles with a stolen base in the 5th. Rinku Singh made his longest appearance to date, going 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Two runs scored in the 6th, on two doubles, a hit batter, a walk, and a wild pitch. A single and a double added another run for the Phillies in the 8th.
The Pirates were held to 5 hits -- a double by DH Justin Howard, and singles by CF Junior Sosa, 3B Eric Avila, C Elias Diaz, and 1B Dylan Child. The Pirates came closest to scoring in the 6th, when Howard doubled and Avila followed with a single into left field. Howard tried to score from second on the throw, but was tagged out at the plate. That was also the only inning in which more than one Pirate was on base at the same time.
Owens Dominates In 9th Win; Spikes Are One-Hit
A few roster moves: The Pirates have designated pitcher Steven Jackson for assignment, so that a roster space on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters will be available. That will make room for reliefer Chris Resop, who the Pirates picked up off waivers from the Braves today.
1B/OF Steve Pearce's surgery on his knee went fine, and he is expected to be out of commission for at least 4 months. He has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, which frees up another spot on the 40-man roster. That will be taken by reliever Chan Ho Park, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from the Yankees today. The Pirates will still need to open a spot on the 25-man roster, but they will have a couple more days to do that, since Park won't be joining the team until Friday.
And, today's action in the Pirates' minor league organization..... The Indianapolis Indians had a scheduled day off today; the West Virginia Power's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds was rained out, so they'll try again tomorrow.

Altoona Curve 5, Akron Aeros 1 (box)
Starter Rudy Owens pitched another stellar start, going 6 innings and allowing only a solo home run to the second batter he faced in the top of the 1st. After that homer, Owens retired the next 17 batters he faced, including 4 strikeouts. Tom Boleska relieved Owens and earned his second save with the Curve. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and allowed only a triple and a walk, with 2 strikeouts. The triple was hit by Jason Kipnis, the first batter Boleska faced. After a short fly out, Kipnis tried to tag up and score on another short fly out to new Curve LF Andrew Lambo. Lambo's throw to C Kris Watts was on target and on time, and Kipnis was thrown out at the plate.
The Curve posted 13 hits and gave Owens and Boleska 5 runs worth of support. 2B Chase d'Arnaud had 3 of the hits, all singles, and four Curve batters, Lambo, Watts, 1B Matt Hague, and RF Miles Durham each had 2 hits. The first Altoona run scored in the 2nd inning. Durham singled, CF Anthony Norman walked, and a fielding error allowed Durham to score. Lambo walked to lead off the 2nd inning rally. A single by Hague and a double by Watts followed, with Watts picking up the RBI. A sacrifice fly by Norman brought in Hague with the second run of the inning.
Singles by d'Arnaud and 3B Josh Harrison led off the 4th inning, and a double steal moved both into scoring position. Hague's RBI single plated d'Arnaud. Watts walked to load the bases, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the inning. The Curve scored their final run of the game in the 7th inning without a hit. SS Yung Chi Chen and DH Jose De Los Santos worked back-to-back walks, and both advanced a base on d'Arnaud's sacrifice bunt. Harrison's sacrifice fly brought in Chen with the Curve's 5th run of the game.
Colla Moves Up; Long Night For Power
Trenton Thunder 8, Altoona Curve 3 (box)
The Curve stretched their losing streak to 5 games tonight while reliever Mike Colla struggled in his AA debut. Derek Hankins made the start for the Curve, but didn't get out of the 4th inning. He gave up a run in the 1st on a hit batter, a stolen base, a ground out, and an RBI single. A fielding error and a double gave Trenton a second run in the 3rd inning, and a single and a double added run #3 in the 4th. Colla relieved Hankins and got a strikeout to end that inning, but a solo homer, a double, two singles, and a passed ball gave Trenton 3 more runs in the 5th. Colla came back out to begin the 6th, but that inning went no better. A single, a walk, and a hit batter loaded the bases, and a single drove in two runs.
The Curve batters were also getting on base, in every inning but the 6th and 7th, but they were not coming around to score as often as the Thunder were. They got onto the scoreboard in the 4th, when 3B Josh Harrison singled and stole second, then moved to third on a wild pitch. 2B Jordy Mercer's single brought Harrison in to score, but Mercer was erased on a double play. They came up with 2 more runs in the bottom of the 8th, when RF Miles Durham led off with a single. SS Chase d'Arnaud walked, and Harrison plated both of them with a double into center field.
Harrison, Mercer, and Durham had 2 hits each, and C Hector Gimenez and LF Anthony Norman each had one hit. Hankins was charged with the loss, his 2nd of the season. Reliever Mike Dubee relieved Colla to finish the 6th with a double play. Dubee gave up a single to lead off the 7th, but the runner was thrown out by Miles Durham when he tried to stretch it into a double. Dubee had a batter reach on a fielding error by Mercer in the 8th, and he walked a batter in the 9th, but both of those runners were also erased with double plays.
Spikes’ and Pirates’ Bats Are Booming
Good news and bad news today...
The bad news is that OF Starling Marte has had some problems with his hand after surgery. Marte had played in two rehab games last week, going 3-for-6, but has not played in over a week. He's going to need to rest the hand for awhile yet -- a setback indeed.
The good news is that OF Mel Rojas Jr, the Pirates' 3rd-round pick in the 2010 draft is reported to be on his way to Pittsburgh to sign a contract. If all goes as expected, he could report to the State College Spikes by the weekend.
A few non-all-star-games going on today:
State College Spikes 11, Connecticut Tigers 1 (box)
The Spikes posted 13 hits on their way to 11 runs this evening in Connecticut. 1B Matt Curry led the team with a 3-for-3 game and 2 RBI. RF Adalberto Santos, DH Chase Lyles, LF Pat Irvine, and C Miguel Mendez each had 2 hits, and 3B Kelson Brown contributed 3 RBI.
The Spikes started off with 2 runs in the top of the 1st. 2B Walker Gourley began the rally with a walk, and Santos reached base on a fielder's choice that Gourley beat out. Curry singled, scoring Gourley, and Lyles singled, bringing in Santos. They added 4 runs in the 3rd inning, when Curry and Lyles both singled again. Irvine followed with a double to plate Curry. Brown's single drove in both Lyles and Irvine. Mendez made it runners on the corners with another single, and Brown scored when CF Kyle Saukko bounced into force out at second but beat the throw to first base.
The Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the 3rd, on two singles and a sacrifice fly. It was the only run that Zack Von Rosenberg allowed in his 5 innings. He gave up 5 hits and one run, and he struck out 5 batters. Colton Cain, Casey Sadler, Teddy Fallon, and Jason Townsend all pitched one scoreless inning. Townsend was the only one who allowed a hit, a single in the 9th. Fallon was the only one to allow a walk, and he erased that runner with a double play. Sadler struck out the side, all swinging, in the 7th.
The Spikes kept going after Connecticut scored their run. Santos tripled with one out in the 4th. Curry walked, and Lyles reached on a fielding error, as Santos scored. A throwing error on the play put Curry on third and Lyles on second. Irvine singled, and Curry crossed the plate, then Brown's sacrifice fly brought in Lyles. Spikes ahead, 9-1. Back-to-back doubles by Santos (ground-rule) and Curry added the first run in the 6th. A walk to Irvine and Brown being hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Mendez singled, scoring Curry and giving the Spikes an 11-1 lead. The Spikes' bats slowed down after that. They had only one base runner over the last three innings -- Curry walked to begin the 8th, but was erased in a double play.
