Indianapolis Indians �4, �Pawtucket Red Sox �1 (box)

The Indianapolis Indians held the PawSox to 5 hits as they earned their 6th straight win tonight. �The win moves them above the .500 mark, with an 11-10 record. �It was warmer in Pawtucket tonight than in the past couple of days, which could only help matters as far as the Indians were concerned.

Both C Luke Carlin and CF Jose Tabata recorded 2 hits each for the Indians, and four Indians contributed RBI: �Tabata, LF Neil Walker, DH Brian Myrow, and SS Brian Friday. Every member of the lineup had at least one hit, except for 3B Pedro Alvarez.

Daniel McCutchen (photo), who was recently reassigned to the Indians,� made his first AAA start of the season, and he was impressive. �McCutchen threw 103 pitches (62 strikes), and scattered 5 hits over 7 innings of work. �Pawtucket DH Josh Reddick had the most success against McCutchen, when he singled with two outs in the 3rd inning (but was thrown out trying to steal second), and homered to lead off the 6th inning. �SS Angel Sanchez doubled off McCutchen in the 4th and singled in the 6th, but both times was left stranded at the end of the inning. �McCutchen also walked two batters and hit one, but left all of them on base too.

The Indians' batters got started with their scoring in the top of the 1st. �Jose Tabata began the game with a single into center field, and when Pawtucket CF Bubba Bell threw wildly back into the infield, Tabata advanced to second base. �Brian Myrow brought him in from second base with a double ripped into right field. �The Tribe added a second run in the 2nd inning. �With one out, Luke Carlin crushed a 3-1 pitch into the right field corner, and raced all the way to third base when RF Matt Sheely had trouble coming up with the ball. �Brian Friday followed with a sacrifice fly, and Carlin scored easily, to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.

Pirates' pitcher Chris Jakubauskas was released from the hospital in Houston this morning. �The diagnosis is a concussion, but's he's ok. �He's probably got an amazing headache, but isn't dizzy....

... You'll be dizzy, though, with all of the roster moves resulting from Jakubauskas going onto the 15-day disabled list.

Pitcher Brian Burres was recalled from Indianapolis. �He could make a start for the Pirates

Pitcher Brian Bass is being called up from Indy and placed onto the Pirates' 40-man roster. �He can also start if needed.

To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Brandon Jones has been Designated For Assignment. �He will have to pass through waivers, and if he does, then the Pirates could sign him to a minor league contract.

Pitcher�Daniel McCutchen was optioned back to Indianapolis. �This time, McCutchen will really report to Indy. � He'll be able to take Jakubauskas's spot in the Indy rotation, which got a bit of a break because of Saturday's rain out.

That still leaves a spot open on the Pirates' roster, but it's likely that Jeff Karstens will be called up to make the start on Tuesday.

And there's rain and thunderstorms predicted for Louisville this afternoon and evening, so the Indians and the Bats may not get to play today either.

Toledo Mud Hens 6, �Indianapolis Indians 3 (box)

The Indianapolis Indians had the early lead at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio tonight, but a 5-run inning by the Mud Hens took the victory away.

Compared to the games they played in Columbus, which lasted way over 3 hours, this 2 hour 19 minute game must have seemed lightning-fast to the Tribe. �With a flurry of roster moves made by the Pirates (see below), the Indians' scheduled starter, Brian Burres had already left for San Francisco. �The ever-flexible Jeremy Powell stepped up to made the start for the Tribe. �Powell breezed through the first two innings, needed only 10 pitches for the 1st and 14 pitches for the 2nd.

The Indians scored in the top of the 2nd using the "bloop-and-blast" method. �3B Pedro Alvarez opened the inning with his first non-homer hit of the season, a line drive single into right field. �1B Steve Pearce followed with the blast -- a homer that sailed over the back of the concourse behind the left field wall. �Pearce knew as soon as it left his bat that it was gone, turning to watch it when he still had one foot in the batters' box. �The Indians had a 2-0 lead.

Leads in Toledo are always tenuous for the Indians, though. �Sure enough, Powell ran into trouble in the bottom of the 3rd. �A lead off walk to LF Clete Thomas was followed with a single by former Indy Indian C Robinzon Diaz, which slipped past SS Brian Friday. 3B Danny Worth grounded to his counterpart Pedro Alvarez, and it would have been a double play, but Alvarez bobbled the ball and only had time to get the out at first base, leaving runners on second and third. �RBI singles by 2B Will Rhymes and SS Brent Dlugach brought in Thomas and Diaz to tie the score at 2-2. �Then RF Brennan Boesch took Powell's 0-1 pitch on a line drive over the right field wall for a 3-run homer and a 5-2 lead.

Phillies 4, �Pirates 2 �(box)

The Pirates left their Florida home and headed north this evening, after a loss in their last Grapefruit League game. �Once again, the Pirates' batters struggled to get hits, managing only 6. �Two of them were solo home runs: �the first by RF Ryan Church in the top of the 1st inning, and the second by C Ryan Doumit in the 4th inning. �There were two doubles, one by minor leaguer PR/LF Miles Durham, and one by SS Ronny Cedeno; LF Lastings Milledge and 1B Jeff Clement both singled.

Starter Daniel McCutchen pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks, with 3 strikeouts. �The Phillies' first run, in the bottom of the 1st, may have initially been ruled unearned, but became earned when the ball that got past a diving 1B Jeff Clement was changed from an error to a hit. �A hit batter, a stolen base, and an RBI single brought in the run to tie the score at 1-1. �In the 2nd inning, a hit fell in between RF Church and 2B Aki Iwamura, then a walk and a single that brought the run in. �The throw in from CF Andrew McCutchen in short center field, sailed over and past C Doumit at the plate. �Doumit's homer tied the score again, at 2-2.

Daniel McCutchen started the 6th inning with an out and a walk, and that gave Hayden Penn his chance. �A passed ball moved the runner to second base, and a ground out advanced him to third base. �An RBI single broke the tie and the Phillies were up 3-2. �Penn gave up a double, then got out of that inning with two strikeouts. �He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th. �Octavio Dotel gave up a solo home run on his first pitch for the Phillies' final run.

Several minor leaguers, mainly from the Altoona Curve, got into the game, and several of them will also accompany the major league team to Philadelphia for the next two games to finish out the pre-season. �In this game: �2B Chase d'Arnaud, CF John Raynor, PH Jim Negrych, Miles Durham, and 3B Josh Harrison.

The Indy Indians were scheduled to play a AAA game against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees this afternoon. �No word on the results.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 4, �Indianapolis Indians 3

The Indians' last-chance rally fell short this afternoon in Tampa, as the Indians lost to the Yankees for the second day in a row. �It was the Indians' 5th straight spring training loss. �Tribe starter Chris Jakubauskas pitched 2 innings and allowed one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out 3 batters. �Kyle Bloom also took the mound for the Indians, and he suffered the loss as he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in his two innings.

CF Jose Tabata got the Indians going with an �RBI double in the 6th inning. �SS Brian Friday added a solo home run in the 8th. �The Indians entered the top of the 9th behind 4-2. �With two outs, 1B Brian Myrow, CF Jon Van Every, and LF Neil Walker hit consecutive singles, as Walker picked up the RBI. � But the Indians left Van Every and Walker stranded as a strikeout ended the inning and the game.

Blue Jays 11, �Pirates 2 �(box)

Three strikes against the Pirates today:

1. �Pirates' batters were able to get only 5 hits. �Two of those were by CF Andrew McCutchen, and 2B Aki Iwamura, RF Garrett Jones, and starter Daniel McCutchen each had one.

2. Pirates' pitchers gave up 14 hits. �Daniel McCutchen went 4 innings and gave up 5 of those hits for 5 runs, though only 2 runs were earned. �Brandon Donnelly lasted only 0.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits. �Anthony Claggett gave up 2 unearned runs and 3 hits, and Jeff Karstens was responsible for one run on 2 hits. �Evan Meek pitched a scoreless inning (but gave up a hit) and Steven Jackson retired the only batter he faced.

3. �Pirates' fielders made 4 errors, which explains all those unearned runs. �SS Ronny Cedeno made fielding errors on back-to-back plays in the 2nd inning, Garrett Jones made a fielding error in the outfield, and 3B Jeremy Farrell, up from minor league camp, made a throwing error.

Also in the game today: �CF John Raynor, 2B Doug Bernier, RF Steve Pearce, C Erik Kratz, LF Austin McClune, 1B Calvin Anderson.

Indianapolis Indians 7, �Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 5

Three home runs gave starter Daniel McCutchen plenty of run support, as the Indians won this afternoon's AAA level minor league game in Clearwater, Florida. �McCutchen pitched 4 scoreless innings and allowed just 3 hits and a walk. �He also struck out two batters. �It took him 61 pitches to get his business done. �Chris Jakubauskas pitched 2 more scoreless innings, with 2 hits and another 2 strikeouts. �The Iron Pigs runs all came in the final two innings of the game.

RF Jose Tabata got the fun started with a solo home run in the top of the 1st inning. �LF Jon Van Every added 2 more runs with his homer in the 4th. �SS Brian Friday homered in the 5th inning, another solo blast. �The Tribe added 3 more runs in the next two innings, piling up 10 hits.

Because of yesterday's rainouts and the fact that the Pirates did not have a major league level Grapefruit League game scheduled for today, starter Kevin Hart pitched in an A level game in Bradenton. �Hart pitched 3.1 innings, and gave up 2 runs. �Three of the four hits he allowed were infield singles and the other was a line drive into center field. �He struck out two batters in the first inning and walked two in the second inning. �He made a total of 74 pitches, and was working on throwing off speed pitches to left-handed batters.

Octavio Dotel, who has been sidelined with a strained left oblique muscle, pitched one inning (18 pitches) in another game this afternoon. �He struck out three batters and was pleased with his performance.
