While traveling for work, I was able to stop in Altoona for a few hours on Sunday to catch a Curve game. Jared Hughes made the start for the Pirates’ Double-A affiliate, which is gearing up for the postseason. Here are a few of my thoughts after taking in a 5-4 Curve loss on a beautiful evening at Blair County Ballpark.
Pitching prospect Bryan Morris, who had struggled in his previous few appearances, skipped his scheduled start this week to rest his arm. Morris has pitched 103 innings this season, already surpassing his 2009 total of 72.2 innings. In a separate move, Tony Watson will replace Jared Hughes in the Altoona starting rotation.
As I was driving to work on Friday morning, I began to suspect that Bryan Morris' spot in the Altoona rotation was due up that night. When I arrived at my office, I fired up the computer and quickly checked whether I was correct. I was, and I discovered that he would be facing Twins’ pitching prospect Kyle Gibson. With a Friday night free of any obligations, I decided that pitching matchup was about as good as any I would find. So on my way home from work, I took a brief two-hour detour to Altoona.
Pitching prospect Bryan Morris, who has not allowed an earned run in 33 innings for High-A Bradenton, will be promoted to Double-A Altoona. Neal Huntington said that Morris could be promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis by the end of the season.
