Prospect Watch: Shaky Outing For Nick Kingham, Cody Dickson Bounces Back From Tough Opener

Published:

TOP OF THE SYSTEM

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from early season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Game Notes: Through four innings on Tuesday afternoon, Nick Kingham was able to keep Toledo off the board, despite giving up six hits. He didn’t walk anyone until the fifth inning, but his pitch count was higher than you would like to see as well. Kingham gave up a lead-off double in the fifth, then walked the next two batters before being pulled. He threw 91 pitches on the day, with 54 going for strikes. After leaving with the bases loaded, Adam Miller gave up two solid hits that scored all three inherited runners.

On the offensive side, Chris Stewart caught the entire game and was tested often by Toledo on the bases. He was 2-for-6 in throwing out base runners. Stewart drove in a run with a single and drew a walk. Mel Rojas Jr. drove in two runs. He is 6-for-19 at the plate. Steve Lombardozzi reached base four times, hitting two doubles, a single and he walked once. Alen Hanson went 0-for-4, leaving him 3-for-19 through five games. Gorkys Hernandez is hitting .316 so far, but he struck out four times in this game.

AA: ALTOONA CURVE

Altoona was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 17th.

 A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Box Score

Result: Bradenton 7, Dunedin 1

Starting Pitcher: Cody Dickson, LHP – 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Erich Weiss, 2B – 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, BB

Other Notable Performers:

JaCoby Jones, DH – 1-for-5, RBI

Reese McGuire, C – 0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB

Jose Osuna, RF – 2-for-5, 2B, RBI

Game Notes:  Cody Dickson needed a bounce back start after a rough Opening Day and he got it on Tuesday night. He threw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. In his first start, he lasted three innings, giving up three runs on nine hits. Julio Vivas finished off the game with two shutout innings. He spent most of last season in the GCL, so Bradenton is a huge jump in competition. The Marauders collected 11 hits in the game and drew six walks, with lead-off hitter Justin Maffei walking three times. Erich Weiss had three hits, including a double and a triple. The three through eight hitters in the lineup each drove in one run apiece, with four of those runs coming in the first inning. Austin Meadows and Barrett Barnes had the night off.

A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER

West Virginia was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up Wednesday as part of a doubleheader.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
