2011 Draft Prospects Rundown: 4/12

Published:

Rendon was intentionally walked five times this weekend.

Here is a recap of how each of the top 2011 draft prospects did this past week.  Click on their names to go to their tracker pages.

ANTHONY RENDON

I was at the ECU/Rice series this past weekend, watching Anthony Rendon in action.  Or more like watching Rendon in in-action, as he was walked for most of the first two games.  For my coverage from those events, and an interview with Rendon, check out the links below.

Game Two

Game Three

Anthony Rendon Interview

Just a quick stats update, Rendon is hitting for a .359/.561/.556 line this season.  He has a .621 OBP since Jeremy Rathjen went down for the season.

GERRIT COLE

Gerrit Cole pitched another complete game, his third of the season, this time throwing 113 pitches.  He allowed no earned runs on five hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.  On the season, Cole now has a 1.74 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP in 57 innings, with a 64:11 K/BB ratio.  He has pitched two complete games in two starts this month, allowing one run on ten hits, with 17 strikeouts and three walks.  He’s definitely making this more of a 50/50 conversation, and could possibly be the favorite over Rendon as the number one pick at this point.

OTHER PROSPECTS

-Matt Purke went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

-Catching up on a few 2008 Pirates’ draft picks who went un-signed and are draft eligible this year:

Zach Wilson, 3B, Arizona State: Drafted in the 26th round in 2008, and is the 37th best prospect in the draft this year.  Wilson is hitting for a .264/.326/.413 line in 121 at-bats, which is down from his .274/.333/.443 line in 106 at-bats at the start of last week.

Drew Gagnon, LHP, Long Beach State: Drafted in the 10th round in 2008, and is the 49th best prospect in the draft this year.  Gagnon had his worst start of the year, going 3.2 innings, and allowing six runs, four earned, on three hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.

-Catching up on an un-signed prep pitchers from the 2010 draft:

Austin Kubitza, 7th Round, Rice: Kubitza threw 5.2 innings on Friday, allowing an unearned run on two hits, with three walks and eleven strikeouts.  You can read my writeup of his start here.
