Minor Transactions: Pena, Sanchez, Verdugo

Published:

The Pirates released Sanchez.

Matt Eddy of Baseball America has some minor league transactions.  The ones we haven’t heard about already:

-The Pirates signed catcher Rodolfo Pena.  This isn’t actually a player signing.  Pena, also known as Rudy Pena, has been a coach in the Pirates’ system for the last three years, spending the 2008 season with Hickory, and the 2009-2010 seasons with the GCL Pirates.

-Along with Craig Hansen, the Pirates released Yeiber Sanchez.  Sanchez was throwing 94-95 MPH when Wilbur saw him at Pirate City, but battled control issues.

-Oscar Verdugo was outrighted to the Mexican League, where he will play for Veracruz, the team that Luis Heredia pitched for last year.  Wilbur also saw Verdugo (mentioned in the above link), and at the time he was only throwing 88-89 MPH, and working up in the zone.
