Winter Leagues: Gustavo Nunez Reaches Base Four Times, Back-to-Back Multi-Hit Games For Edgar Munoz

Published:

In the Dominican on Monday night, Alen Hanson went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a strikeout. He played second base and handled all five plays in the field cleanly, including two double plays. He’s made one error in the playoffs. If you missed it from yesterday, Hanson received permission from the Pirates to remain in the Dominican until at least the end of the round robin tournament. In six playoff games, he is 6-for-24 with a walk, two runs scored and he’s driven in five runs.

Mel Rojas Jr. came in as a defensive replacement in left field during the seventh inning. He had a single and scored a run in his only at-bat. In six playoff games, he is 3-for-15, with two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Gustavo Nunez went 2-for-3 with two walks in his team’s 9-5 loss. During 38 regular season games, he drew a total of four walks. He is hitting .286 in eight playoff games and has already walked five times.

Josh Wall pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit, walked none and picked up two strikeouts. Wall is still a minor league free agent.

In Venezuela, Gorkys Hernandez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his team’s 3-2 win. This game broke a six-game hit streak that started the day he returned from missing five weeks with a finger injury.

In Mexico, Sebastian Valle had an unusual down game on both offense and defense. He went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout. Behind the plate, he had a passed ball and committed an error on a missed catch. He also gave up two steals on two attempts. The error led to the tying run scoring in the seventh and his team lost in the 11th inning. Valle did pick-off Ali Solis at second base. Solis spent the 2013 season in the Pirates system.

In Panama on Sunday, Edgar Munoz went 2-for-4 with two singles. He went 2-for-6 with an RBI and run scored on Monday. He is hitting .254/.329/.338 through 18 games. Munoz entered the Pirates system with a bang in 2011, batting .360 in the Venezuelan Summer League. He slumped after being moved to the DSL in 2012 and was injured for all but four games in 2013. This past season, he started in the GCL, then was quickly moved to Bristol where he held his own. Munoz drew more walks than strikeouts during his three seasons in the VSL/DSL, but his approach seemed to change in the States, posting a 6:26 BB/SO ratio in 36 games. He was also one of the older players on the team, so his prospect status is very low at this point.

Ashley Ponce went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Sunday. On Monday, he went 0-for-2 with a walk and run scored. He is hitting .182/.297/.218 in 16 games.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
