Prospect Watch: Luis Heredia’s Best Start of the Year; JaCoby Jones Homers

Published:

TOP OF THE SYSTEM

A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors (Casey Sadler #16). If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Jameson Taillon #1, Clay Holmes #12), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 20 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the mid-season top 20 update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

AAA: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Box Score

Result: Indianapolis 9, Gwinnett 4

Starting Pitcher: Adam Wilk, LHP – 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR

Top Hitter: Matt Hague, 1B – 1-for-5, HR

Other Notable Performers:

Brent Morel, 3B – 3-for-4, BB

Mel Rojas, RF – 2-for-4, 3B

Jaff Decker, LF – 2-for-3, BB

Game Notes: Adam Wilk has pitched well in his last three starts, with a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings in the month of June, along with a 16:6 K/BB ratio. Matt Hague hit his tenth home run of the year. He also has a hit in seven of his last eight games. While Hague crushes left-handers (.949 OPS in 58 at-bats this year), seven of his home runs have come against right-handers this year. That has led to a .776 OPS in 148 at-bats against right-handers. Mel Rojas has been on fire since being promoted to Indianapolis, with a .333/.379/.426 line in 54 at-bats.

AA: ALTOONA CURVE

Box Score

Result: Reading 7, Altoona 5

Starting Pitcher: Joely Rodriguez, LHP – 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 HR

Top HitterMatt Curry, 1B – 2-for-4, HR, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Alen Hanson, SS – 2-for-5, 2B, BB

Drew Maggi, 2B – 2-for-2, 3 BB

Justin Howard, RF – 3-for-4, 2B, BB

Game Notes: Joely Rodriguez bounced back from a bad outing, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings. The good news for Rodriguez is that he hasn’t been walking a lot of hitters this year, with just 20 walks in 70.1 innings, including three in 19 innings over his last three starts. Control has been an issue for him in the past. The downside is that he hasn’t been striking out a lot of guys, with only 36 strikeouts this year. He’s going to need to improve those numbers to remain a starter.

Matt Curry hit his third homer of the year in 78 at-bats. He’s got a .783 OPS on the season, and an .828 OPS against right-handers. Alen Hanson had another two hit night, and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. After putting up an .803 OPS in May, Hanson has a .911 OPS during the month of June.

A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Bradenton was off today.

A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER

Box Score

Result: Delmarva 6, West Virginia 5

Starting Pitcher: Luis Heredia, RHP – 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: JaCoby Jones, SS – 1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Harold Ramirez, CF – 2-for-3, 2B

Reese McGuire, C – 2-for-5

Elvis Escobar, RF – 2-for-4, 2B

Game Notes: In his three starts since returning from the DL, Luis Heredia has a 3.95 ERA in 13.2 innings, with a 9:10 K/BB ratio. Tonight was his best outing since returning, and his best outing of the year. He only gave up one run in five innings, and only walked two batters. It was his best walk rate since his first start of the season, when he walked two in five innings. Reese McGuire had two hits, giving him his third straight multi-hit game. Harold Ramirez had two hits, and extended his hitting streak to ten games. JaCoby Jones hit his eighth home run of the year. With Blake Taylor being named the PTBNL in the Ike Davis trade, this is the first time Pirates fans can enjoy a home run from Jones without fearing that he might be the PTBNL.
