Pirates Spent $5 M On International Bonuses in 2010

Published:

Heredia was a big factor towards the Pirates spending $5 M on international bonuses in 2010.

Today, Baseball America released the international spending figures from the 2010 season, as well as a look at the top 20 bonuses of all time.  The Pittsburgh Pirates finished fourth in the league in overall spending with $5.00 M spent on international bonuses in 2010.  Luis Heredia accounted for over half of that total, signing for $2.6 M.  However, the Pirates spent a combined $2.4 M on the other 30 players they signed.

Heredia tied for the fifth highest bonus of all time, and tied for the second highest bonus in 2010, both times tying with Ariel Ovando, the outfield prospect signed by the Houston Astros. Heredia was the only Pirates’ signing who finished on the top 30 bonuses list for the 2010 season.  The next highest reported Pirates bonus went to Willy Garcia, who signed for $280,000 (note that even though Cesar Lopez agreed to a $600,000 deal in September, his deal only became official yesterday, which is why he is not on the list).

Here are all of the reported bonuses from the 2010 class:

Luis Heredia – $2,600,000

Willy Garcia – $280,000

Dilson Herrera – $220,000

Jonathan Herrand – $185,000

Isaac Sanchez – $180,000

Miguel DeAza – $150,000
