The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed third baseman Christian Colonel to a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Colonel played for three different organizations in 2010, between the AA and AAA levels. In his career at the AAA level, Colonel has a .291/.352/.422 line in 886 at-bats, although all of those came in the Pacific Coast League.
Colonel was the number 28 prospect in the Colorado Rockies’ farm system in 2009 at the age of 27, according to Baseball America. He plays first base, third base, the corner outfield positions, and has also played some second base. He lacks power, and has a decent amount of speed. For the most part he’s a AA/AAA bench player, although I could see him getting some playing time at third base and in the outfield at the start of the season in Altoona.
