Game Notes: The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, only to give up that lead in the next half inning, dropping Monday’s game 3-2 to the Mets2. Starter Miguel Ferreras went 4.2 innings, allowing one run. He was followed by Marcus Beltrez, who threw 2.1 scoreless innings. Arquimedes Lorenzo took the loss, allowing two runs in the eighth, though both runs were unearned due to a passed ball and error. For Lorenzo, it was his first loss of the season. Shortstop Johan De Jesus had two hits and an RBI, but he also made the error that cost the Pirates the game, his 21st error of the season. Luis Benitez has two hits and scored a run.

PIRATES2

Box Score

Result: Rojos 1, Pirates 1 (suspended in 10th inning)

Game Notes: This game was suspended with two outs in the top of the tenth inning. It will be finished next time the two teams meet. Pirates starting pitcher Jose Batista allowed one run over four innings pitched. In each of his last six starts, he has given up one run or less. In seven starts, he is 2-0, 1.15 in 31.1 innings. Reliever Horelbin Ramos followed Batista with five shutout innings.

Player Of The Day

The Pirates signed a 21-year-old outfielder this year named Rudy Guzman. That is much older than you normally see in the DSL, where players usually sign between the age of 16 and 18, with older players almost always being roster fillers. Guzman is now 22-years-old as of last week and he has been playing more often recently. He has a seven game hitting streak going that includes a three hit game on Saturday. Guzman has played just 14 games and due to an 0-for-9 start to his career, his average despite the hit streak is .229 in 48 AB’s and all 11 hits have been singles. Part of the reason he is playing more is because the Pirates sent DSL outfielder Henrry Rosario to the Gulf Coast League last week. As mentioned on Saturday, they have also had some injury issues that have put three position players out for the season, so the two Pirates teams are a little shorthanded.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
