Game Notes: The Pirates2 moved to 27-20 on the season with a one-sided shutout over the Mets1. Starter Jose Batista threw five shutout innings and over his last three starts, he hasn’t allowed an earned run in 15 innings. Batista has given up more than one earned run in just one of his 12 appearances. Reliever Hector Garcia picked up his first save by throwing the last three innings. The Pirates had 16 hits, among them were the team-leading fifth triple from Edgar Figueroa and the first career home run from Yoel Gonzalez. Jose Salazar had four RBI’s, doubling his season total. Pitcher Remy De Aza pitched the sixth inning, walking a batter. It was his first appearance since June 4th, his season debut.
Player Of The Day
Today’s player of the day is Hector Garcia, who picked up his first career save today. The 17-year-old, 6’0″, 170 pound lefty has had an impressive debut to his career so far, posting a 3-1, 1.73 record. In 13 relief appearances, he has pitched a total of 26 innings, going multi-innings in each of his last five outings. Garcia has had some control issues, walking 14 batters, but he has kept runs off the board. In his last ten games, he has an 0.84 ERA in 21.1 innings. Right-handed batters are hitting just .190 against him, while lefties are 2-for-13 with one walk. Garcia has not allowed a home run yet, though he gives up more fly balls that you would like to see. He has an 0.57 GO/AO ratio. His age and limited innings probably means he will return to the DSL next year, but he seems to be on the right track early on.
