On Tuesday morning, the South Atlantic League named six West Virginia Power players to the All-Star game, which will be played on June 18th in Lakewood.
Getting the honors for the Power are, Stetson Allie, Josh Bell, Walker Gourley, Dilson Herrera, Tyler Glasnow and Orlando Castro.
Stetson Allie is leading the SAL with 16 homers, 54 RBIs, 72 hits, 136 total bases, a .642 slugging percentage and a 1.060 OPS. The big first baseman is hitting .340 in 55 games this year, fourth highest total in the league
Right fielder Josh Bell has a .272/.347/.456 slash line in 54 games. He is second on the team with seven homers and 43 RBIs, plus leads the Power with 15 doubles and 41 runs scored.
Second baseman Dilson Herrera has hit .294, with an .803 OPS and nine stolen bases in 47 games. After his impressive season last year in the Gulf Coast League, Topps named Herrera the league’s Player of the Year.
Utility fielder Walker Gourley also made the team, thanks in part to his .325 average in 45 games. It’s been a breakout season for the 21-year-old, who spent three seasons in the New York-Penn League before finally getting a chance at full-season ball. He has played first base and corner outfield this year, but in the past he has played every position.
As for the pitchers, the only surprise might be the fact Joely Rodriguez didn’t make the team. Tyler Glasnow and Orlando Castro both made the team and you probably couldn’t find two pitchers with a bigger difference in size and style.
Castro has shown amazing control all season, walking just five batters in 11 starts. The little lefty hasn’t allowed a homer or walk to a left-handed batter all season. He is 6-3, 2.04 in 61.2 innings, with 54 strikeouts.
Glasnow is nine inches taller than Castro, and a righty with some control issues, who relies heavily on his mid-90’s fastball. He has put up some amazing numbers this season, including a stretch of seven straight games with two or fewer hits allowed. In 47.2 innings, Glasnow has 72 strikeouts, while holding batters to a .127 BAA. He has a 3-1, 3.21 record in 11 starts.
Joely Rodriguez didn’t make the team despite his 4-3, 2.85 record in 11 starts, with 48 strikeouts in 60 innings.
