The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejeda off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, and have designated left-hander Doug Slaten for assignment. Tejeda has been assigned to Double-A.
Tejeda is a 22-year-old who is hitting for a .262/.294/.396 line in 202 at-bats in Double-A this year. Last year in Double-A he hit for a .249/.297/.339 line in 457 at-bats. Coming in to the year Baseball America had him rated as the 24th best prospect in Boston’s system. They profiled him as a potential .260 hitter with 15-20 home run power. He mostly plays second base now, but might outgrow the position and eventually move to a corner outfield spot.
