Altoona was rained out last night. The game will be made up on May 5th as part of a doubleheader. Just a note on the short-season leagues. The Dominican Summer League begins play on June 2nd, the Pirates will have two teams in that league this year. Rudy Owens will be making his third start of the season today. In his last start, which occurred last Sunday, Owens went seven innings, allowing two runs on two solo homers. He gave up four hits, no walks and struck out four. Rudy has yet to allow a walk in 12 innings and he has recorded eight strikeouts. Five of the six runs he has allowed this year have come on solo home runs. Today’s opposing pitcher is Sean Gallagher, who threw 132 innings for Indianapolis last season.

Aaron Poreda has made two starts so far this year, pitching a total of 11 innings with two earned runs allowed. He gave up one unearned run in his first start, which was on 4/10 when he went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He has allowed 14 base runners and struck out eight batters.

Tyler Waldron will make his second start of the season tonight, he has also made two relief appearances. In his only start on 4/16 he threw five scoreless innings, giving up six hits, one walk and he struck out five. In his two relief outings, he went a combined 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits while walking four and striking out four. Tyler finished last season at Bradenton, where he went 4-1 4.25 in seven games, five as a starter.

Matt Benedict will make his fourth start of the season tonight. In his first two starts, he pitched a total of 9.2 innings without allowing an earned run. On 4/7 in his first start, he recorded seven strikeouts. In his last start on Tuesday, Matt went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, one walk and he struck out four. Last year he made 15 starts for State College, going 5-3 3.79 in 71.1 innings with 39 strikeouts.
