PITTSBURGH — First baseman Garrett Jones lost his case to Pittsburgh today and will earn $2.25 million for the 2012 season. This morning the arbitration panel ruled in the favor of the Pirates.

The Pirates and Jones each made their cases in front of arbitrators on Wednesday in Florida.

Jones, 30, asked for $2.5 million in his first year of arbitration, the Pirates countered with $2.25 million. Jones made $455,500 during the 2011 season.

Jones’ arbitration hearing was just the second with the club since 2004, when they lost the case to shortstop Jack Wilson. The Pirates also lost their arbitration case to right-hander Ross Ohlendorf last February.

Jones finished the 2011 season with a .243 avg, 30 doubles, 16 home runs and 58 RBI over 148 games with the Pirates. His 58 home runs since 2009 rank first on the Pirates (Andrew McCutchen is second with 51).
