Pirates Prospect Watch: Bubba Chandler’s Pitch Breakdown From Latest Start

Published:

Bubba Chandler made what is likely to be his final start of the 2024 season on Tuesday. He allowed two runs in 5.1 innings, with an 8:2 K/BB.

Chandler didn’t allow a run until the fifth inning, by which point Indianapolis was leading 2-1. He allowed the tying run to reach base in the sixth, and the run scored on a bases loaded walk by Ryder Ryan.

Throwing his four-seam fastball 52% of the time, Chandler sat 96.3 MPH, touching 98.4. He had five whiffs and ten called strikes for a 33% called and swinging strike rate.

His slider was thrown 28% of the time, with four whiffs and five called strikes for a 38% CSW.

The changeup was thrown 16% of the time, with two whiffs and three called strikes for a 36% CSW.

He also threw a curveball three times, with one called strike. That gave Chandler four pitches with a 33% or higher CSW on the evening.

Chandler has done a lot to develop his pitches over the last year. He’s improved the control of his four-seam fastball, while improving his slider and changeup to above-average or plus offerings. The curveball is also looking like a promising fourth pitch.

After this latest start, Chandler has a 1.83 ERA in 39.1 innings in Triple-A, with a 54:15 K/BB and a .183 average against.
