Pirates Prospect Watch: Bubba Chandler Dominates, Termarr Johnson Homers

Bubba Chandler extended his hot start at the Triple-A level, throwing five innings with no earned runs on Wednesday.

Chandler allowed three hits and one unearned run, while walking two and striking out five. In four starts at the Triple-A level, Chandler has a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings, with a 28:6 K/BB.

The top prospect in the system sat 97.1 MPH with his fastball, touching 99.3. The pitch had eight whiffs and ten called strikes for a 35% called and swinging strike rate. His slider had two whiffs and two called strikes for a less effective 17% CSW. However, his changeup was effective, with three whiffs and two called strikes for a 36% CSW.

Chandler wasn’t the only top prospect making news in his new assignment.

Termarr Johnson hit his first home run at the Double-A level, helping Altoona to an 8-4 win. All of Wednesday’s minor league action is detailed below.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS won game one 2-1, led by Bubba Chandler’s five innings.

  • RHP Bubba Chandler: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
  • SS Liover Peguero: 1-for-2, HR, RBI
  • 2B Nick Yorke: 1-for-3, 2B
  • CF Jack Suwinski: 1-for-2, 3B, RBI
  • RHP Isaac Mattson: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Jack Suwinski put Indianapolis on the board in the first inning with an RBI triple that scored Nick Yorke, who doubled one at-bat earlier. Liover Peguero provided the second run, hitting his 13th homer of the season in the second inning. It was the fourth homer in the last week for Peguero. Isaac Mattson closed out the game with two perfect innings, striking out four.

STATCAST HEROES

Mattson sat 94.8, touching 96.8 MPH in his two innings. He had three whiffs and five called strikes for a 53% CSW on the fastball. His slider had one whiff and two called strikes on five pitches, and his changeup had one whiff in three pitches. The homer from Peguero was hit 106.6 MPH, traveling 417 feet. The double by Yorke was hit 105 MPH.

INDIANAPOLIS won game two 2-1.

Colin Holderman opened game two with a scoreless inning, his first in three rehab appearances. Beau Sulser followed with one run allowed across the next four innings. Liover Peguero had a two-hit game to follow his homer in the first game. He hit his 25th double of the year in the fourth inning, giving Indianapolis their first run to tie the score at 1-1. Andres Alvarez had a big game, with three hits including an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to provide the go-ahead run.

STATCAST HEROES

Alvares hit a double at 103.5 MPH. His triple was hit 81.9 MPH, and he had a single at 84.2 MPH. Joshua Palacios hit a 101 MPH double. Sulser had three whiffs on his changeup, two on his cutter, and three on his knuckle curve.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 8-4, with help from Termarr Johnson’s homer.

Termarr Johnson hit his first homer at the Double-A level. It was a two run shot in the fourth inning with two outs, giving Altoona a 7-1 lead. Jase Bowen capped off a five run first inning with his seventh homer of the year, hitting a two run shot with one out. Eli Wilson closed out the scoring with a solo shot in the sixth, his second homer of the year. Tres Gonzalez hit two doubles, giving him nine on the season. Emmanuel Chapman pitched four innings, allowing one run and striking out five. Chapman has a 1.64 ERA in 22 innings this month, with a 22:12 K/BB. He’s only walked one batter in eight innings his last two starts, showing improvements with his control.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 5-4 in ten innings.

  • RHP Alessandro Ercolani: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
  • 2B Duce Gourson: 2-for-5, 2B, RBI
  • CF P.J. Hilson: 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • 1B Josiah Sightler: 1-for-3, HR, BB, RBI
  • DH Mitch Jebb: 1-for-5, 2B

P.J. Hilson hit his 12th homer, giving Greensboro a 2-0 lead in the second inning. It was the second homer in as many days for Hilson, and his seventh straight game with a hit. Josiah Sightler hit a solo homer in the sixth, his 14th of the year. Duce Gourson had two hits, including his first double at the High-A level. Mitch Jebb hit his 11th double. Alessandro Ercolani pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Ercolani has been on fire this month, with a 1.10 ERA in 16.1 innings, with a 22:3 K/BB. This followed an 0.69 ERA in 13 innings in July, with a 16:4 K/BB.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON was postponed due to rain.
