Pirates Prospect Watch: Charles McAdoo Continues Breakout With Another Home Run

Published:

Charles McAdoo hit his third home run in eight games at the Double-A level. On Sunday afternoon, McAdoo launched the home run in the sixth inning to put Altoona on the board in a game they would lose 7-4.

Since being promoted to the Double-A level, McAdoo is batting .286/.444/.750, while reaching base safely in all but one of his games. This followed a breakout year in High-A, where he hit .336/.415/.561 with nine homers.

McAdoo had been one of the best stories in the Pirates’ minor league system this year, and one of the few hitters who is actually hitting. Drafted in the 13th round last year out of San Jose State, he’s done nothing but hit since entering pro ball. McAdoo is now at a level where the offense can start to be taken seriously, and he’s off to a tremendous start in his first week-plus.

My top 50 prospect update will be released on the site later on Monday. I decided to take an approach with McAdoo where I bought in to his early success, and projected him as a starter, who could arrive in the majors in 2025, and maybe get a more serious shot in 2026. That ETA almost seems too conservative when considering his early results. McAdoo ended up inside my top ten, ranking as the second-best hitting prospect behind Termarr Johnson. Check the site later for the full top 50 update.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 12-8

  • C Dylan Shockley: 2-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI
  • DH Seth Beer: 1-for-2, HR, 2 BB, 3 RBI
  • CF Joshua Palacios: 3-for-5, 2B, RBI
  • 1B Jake Lamb: 2-for-4
  • LF Matt Gorski: 1-for-4, 2B

Dylan Shockley hit his first homer at the Triple-A level, launching a three run shot in the second inning. He also hit his fourth double of the year. Seth Beer hit his first homer since joining Indianapolis. Jake Lamb made his return to the lineup, joining Beer as the first base depth out of Triple-A. Joshua Palacios returned to Indianapolis during the month of June, and hit .370/.431/.522 with a homer and four doubles. Matt Gorski hit his 15th double. Ryan Borucki made a rehab appearance, throwing 0.2 innings to get out of the third inning.

STATCAST HEROES

Liover Peguero had some tough luck, hitting two lineouts around 106 MPH. Palacios had the hardest hit, with a single at 107.2 MPH. He also had a 101.8 MPH double.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA lost 7-4, despite the home run from Charles McAdoo.

  • C Eli Wilson: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • 2B Tsung-Che Cheng: 1-for-4, 2B
  • SS Kervin Pichardo: 1-for-4, RBI
  • RHP Grant Ford: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Justin Meis: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Eli Wilson hit his first homer of the year in Double-A, launching a solo shot in the eighth inning. This made the score 7-2, after McAdoo homered in the sixth to put Altoona on the board after Akron had scored seven runs. Grant Ford had the best results on the pitching side, striking out four in two shutout innings. Tsung-Che Cheng hit his 11th double.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 10-1

  • LHP Yoldin De La Paz: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
  • 3B Jack Brannigan: 1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI
  • C Geovany Planchart: 3-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI
  • SS Mitch Jebb: 3-for-4, BB
  • 2B Termarr Johnson: 1-for-5

Jack Brannigan hit his tenth homer of the year, and his second in as many games. He’s hit three home runs since last Sunday, heating up at the plate in the power department. Geovany Planchart and Mitch Jebb each had three hit games. Yoldin De La Paz made a spot start, throwing four innings with one run allowed. He was followed by two shutout innings from Jaycob Deese, two shutout from Darvin Garcia, and one more scoreless frame from Brandan Bidios. All three relievers picked up two strikeouts, with no walks and one hit allowed.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON lost 4-1

  • RHP Carlos Jimenez: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K

  • DH Shalin Polanco: 1-for-4, 2B
  • LF Enmanuel Terrero: 1-for-4, SB

Carlos Jimenez pitched his longest outing of the year. It wasn’t his worst control outcome of the year, but control was an issue with four walks and a hit batter. He struck out five, only giving up three earned runs. Inmer Lobo pitched three scoreless innings. He’s got a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings in relief, after putting up a 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings in the FCL to open the year. Lobo was added in a trade for Hoy Park prior to the 2023 season.

STATCAST HEROES

Jimenez had five whiffs on seven swings against his changeup, which is one of the best in the system. His curveball added three whiffs on four swings, with three more called strikes. Lobo sat 85.7 MPH with his fastball. He had two whiffs on four swings against the changeup, with one whiff each on his fastball and slider.
