Bryse Wilson wasn’t great, but he was effective. Which is really the best you can ask for.
Wilson was able to hold the Cincinnati Reds to three earned runs across 5.2 IP. The third run came on a groundball hit just to the right side of second base where Kevin Newman fielded it and probably should’ve been able to get the third out, but lost the ball in transition allowing a run to score. Overall Wilson did what he does best, which is pitch to contact and hope for the best. He recorded four strike outs to go along with seven hits and two walks.
The Pittsburgh Pirates offense was mostly powered by the rookies again to give Wilson his third win of the season.
In the first inning Bryan Reynolds took the first pitch he saw and deposited it into left field for a 1-0 lead for his team leading 22nd HR of the season.
Bryse Wilson gave up a two-run HR to Aristides Aquino in the bottom of the fourth to flip the score to 2-1.
As stated, the rookies weren’t going to have it. After leading off the fifth inning with two singles, Rocking Rodolfo Castro went yard for his eighth HR of the campaign to give the Pirates the lead back. Then, with Ke’Bryan Hayes on base by way of an error and with two outs, Diego Castillo celebrated his return with a two-run HR and 6-2 lead, his 11th in the MLB this season.
After Wilson gave up the third run in the sixth to make it 6-3, Robert Stephenson came in to get the final out. Stephenson came back out for the seventh and struck out all three batters he faced on 13 pitches.
Wil Crowe pitched the 8th inning and put two runners on after getting two outs, but got the fifth batter of the inning to ground out on one pitch. After the Pirates offense put up their fourth goose egg following the five-run fifth inning, Crowe came back out for another inning.
It started off about as well as all the other times a reliever is left in for a second inning, with the first two runners reaching base. Luckily this time Crowe was able to work around it, and retired the next three batters for a 6-3 victory and his fourth save of the season.
Minor shoutout to Cal Mitchell who entered as a pinch hitter for Castillo in the seventh and finished 1-for-1 with a walk. He’s now six for his last seven with three walks to one strikeout.

Oviedo Notes: This will be Johan Oviedo’s third start for the Pirates and so far it hasn’t gone very well. In his two starts so far he’s given up four earned runs in a combined 4.2 IP. He’s given up only three hits to go with six strike outs, but the killer has been the eight walks he’s issued. Justice de los Santos mentioned that Oviedo had been working on a new fastball grip, so hopefully that explains some of the issues and he sees a step forward on Tuesday.

Reds Starter: TBD
Ortiz Notes: This will be Luis Ortiz’s MLB debut. Ortiz was signed in October of 2018 and has a 5-9 record with a 4.56 ERA across two levels this season. His numbers may not show it on the surface but he is a big kid — listed 6’2″ and 240 lbs on MiLB page — with big stuff, reaching 100 MPH recently in the minors.

Once Ortiz and Collins debut, the Pirates will tie their team record for most players used in a season. Way back in 2021, they used 64 players, which has stood the test of time until now.
