Duane Underwood, Jr., continued his rehab with the Marauders and failed to get out of the first inning.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Minor League Season Preview: 2022 Indianapolis Indians

Game Time: 6:35pm

Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Nathan Kirby

  • Final Line: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Notable Performances:

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 1-3, BB, SB
  • Canaan Smith-Njigba 1-3, BB, SB
  • Travis Swaggerty 2-3
  • Max Kranick 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (13-11) went with a bullpen game, which means that a bunch of guys have to pitch well.  That didn’t happen, so the Indians lost to Louisville, 6-3.  Nathan Kirby started it off with two scoreless innings, then Max Kranick put up two more.  Indy at that point had a 1-0 lead, but Shea Murray came on for his first appearance of the season.  He couldn’t throw strikes, which has always been a problem, and he allowed two runs.  Matt Eckelman and Eric Handhold each allowed two more, although Eckelman’s were unearned.  Indy managed only five hits and fanned 13 times.  Travis Swaggerty had two of the hits, along with a run and an RBI.  Ji-Hwan Bae and Canaan Smith-Njigba each had a hit, a walk and a steal.  The 2-5 hitters — Oneil Cruz, Hoy Park, Mason Martin and Rodolfo Castro — combined to go 0-for-16 with seven strikeouts.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

Minor League Season Preview: 2022 Altoona Curve

Game Time: 12:35pm

Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Michael Burrows

  • Final Line: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Notable Performances:

  • Jared Triolo 1-4
  • Nick Gonzales 1-3, 2B, HBP
  • Blake Sabol 1-3, 2B, BB
  • Liover Peguero 2-2, 3B, SF
  • Lolo Sanchez 2-3, 2B
  • Tucupita Marcano 1-3, 2B
  • Tahnaj Thomas 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

Altoona (10-12) beat Erie, 5-2, in a game shortened by rain to six innings.  Michael Burrows had, by his standards, a pretty good start.  He got within an out of completing five innings, but at that point gave up a double and a single, bringing in Tahnaj Thomas to finish the inning.  Thomas threw a scoreless sixth and picked up the win.  Burrows allowed two runs and struck out six.  Liover Peguero continued to torch the Eastern League, getting a single, triple and sacrifice fly.  He drove in two, giving him the league lead in RBIs.  He had a chance for more in the top of the sixth with two outs and runners at the corners, but Tucupita Marcano tried to catch the pitcher napping and steal home only to get caught.  Marcano had a two-run double.  Nick Gonzales, Blake Sabol and Lolo Sanchez each had doubles as well.  Sanchez had two hits and is quietly batting .316.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

Minor League Season Preview: 2022 Greensboro Grasshoppers

Game Time: 11am

Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Adrian Florencio

  • Final Line: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K

Notable Performances:

  • Sammy Siani 0-3, 2 BB, SB
  • Maikol Escotto 1-4, 2B, HBP
  • Matt Gorski 1-4, HR (7), BB
  • Henry Davis 3-5, HR (4), 2 SB
  • Endy Rodriguez 1-2, 3B, 2 BB
  • Abrahan Gutierrez 1-2, 2 BB

Game Recap:

Greensboro (9-13) got a great start from Adrian Florencio against a bad Asheville team and won, 8-5.  Florencio came in with an ERA of 11.45, but the Tourists apparently were an antidote.  Over five innings, he gave up just one hit and one run, while fanning 11.  He was followed by two other struggling pitchers, Santiago Florez and Garrett Leonard, neither of whom fared as well.  They gave up two runs apiece and Cam Junker had to get the last out in the ninth to pick up the save.  Henry Davis continued to raise the obvious question, getting two singles and his fourth home run of the year.  He also stole two bases.  (Of course, if he gets promoted to Altoona and hits well, people will expect him to be promoted to Indianapolis.  Then, if he hits well, they’ll expect him in Pittsburgh.  And then they’ll expect Derek Shelton to actually play him.  It’ll just never end.)  Matt Gorski added his seventh longball.  He’s now batting 268/354/592, is third in the league in home runs, and is 8-for-8 as a base stealer.  Endy Rodriguez had a triple and two walks, and Abrahan Gutierrez a single and two walks.  Maikol Escotto had a double.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Minor League Season Preview: 2022 Bradenton Marauders

Game Time: 6:30pm

Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Duane Underwood, Jr.

  • Final Line: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Notable Performances:

  • Tsung-Che Cheng 0-5
  • Jacob Gonzalez 0-2, BB, HBP
  • Rodolfo Nolasco 3-4
  • Cristian Charle 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Carlos Jimenez 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

Game Recap:

Bradenton (13-9) was another team going with a bullpen game and it didn’t work for them, either, as they lost to Tampa, 4-1.  Duane Underwood, Jr., made another rehab start and failed to get out of the first inning, as he couldn’t throw strikes.  He left with the bases loaded and two out, and Darvin Garcia walked in a run.  Garcia went two and a third without allowing any runs himself.  Justin Meis followed and, for the second straight outing, was let down by his defense.  After a leadoff single, Brenden Dixon let a routine double play ball go through his legs and both runners scored.  Meis was charged with one earned run.  Cristian Charle fanned three in his one inning, then Carlos Jimenez struck out eight over three and a third.  He ran into trouble in his last inning, leaving with one out and the bases loaded.  One of those runners scored.  Overall, Bradenton pitchers whiffed 15.  The Marauders’ offense didn’t show up, as they had just four singles, three of them by Rodolfo Nolasco.  He drove in the only run.  Wyatt Hendrie had the only other hit.
