The Dominican League had a scheduled day off today.
VENEZUELAN LEAGUE
Leones del Caracas 3, Bravos de Margarita 1
Anthony Claggett made the start for Los Bravos and allowed only one run on 4 hits. The downside was that he also walked 5 batters in those 5 innings. The Leones’ run Claggett allowed came in the top of the 1st, on a walk and a single plus a throwing error in right field. The run was earned because Claggett gave up two more walks and a wild pitch in the inning. Claggett also threw a wild pitch in the 2nd, and allowed a double and another walk, but did not let those runners score. Claggett worked around a walk and a single in the 3rd. He erased singles in the 4th and the 5th with two double plays. Margarita tied the score with a run on two walks, a balk, and an RBI ground out in the 2nd. After Claggett had finished for the evening, Caracas scored one run in each of the 7th and 8th innings to take the 3-1 lead. Pirates’ Jhonathan Ramos took the mound for Los Bravos in the top of the 9th. He pitched a scoreless frame, giving up a flukey infield single that was deflected off his third baseman, and also a walk.
Tigres de Aragua 5, Tiburones de La Guaira 4
After 6 scoreless innings, Los Tiburones got onto the scoreboard with 2 runs in the top of the 7th. Two doubles and two singles brought in those runs. Los Tigres came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th. After a single and a walk, a sacrifice bunt put both runners into scoring position. Former Pirate pinch-hitter Raul Chavez doubled, driving in both runners, and another single brought Chavez in also. Los Tiburones tied the score with a run in the top of the 9th, and when Aragua could not respond, the game headed into extra innings. La Guaira broke the tie in the top of the 10th with a hit batter, a single, and an RBI double. But Los Tigres came back again in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs, a walk and a single put two men on and brought LF Lastings Milledge to the plate. Milledge smacked the ball into right field, where Los Tiburones’ right fielder missed it — the fielding error let both runners score and gave the win to Los Tigres. Milledge and CF Jonel Pacheco each singled in the game.
Cardenales de Lara 8, Caribes de Anzoategui 7
Lara also pulled it out with a run in the bottom of the 10th. A single and two intentional walks loaded the bases, and with two outs, an single through the hole into right field gave Los Cardenales the walk-off win. Both teams had big first innings, with a grand slam for Los Caribes in the top of the frame, and a 2-run homer for Los Cardenales in the bottom. CF Gorkys Hernandez walked and scored one of two runs for Los Caribes in the top of the 4th. Lara tied the score at 6-6 with a run in the bottom of the 4th and 2 runs in the 5th. Lara made it 7-6 when a run was walked in in the 7th. Two fielding errors and a single let Los Caribes tie the score again, 7-7 in the top of the 9th. Los Caribes could not get anything going in the top of the 10th, though, and Los Cardenales took the win. Hernandez walked a second time in the game, and was hitless in two other at-bats.
