Team USA took advantage of an error by the Greek team while the US pitching staff combined for a 3-hit shut-out. Drew Smyly (Tigers) got the start for Team USA. He struck out 7 of the 19 batters he faced over 6 innings, while only allowing two hits with no walks. One of the hits, a single in the 2nd inning, still resulted in an out when the batter tried to stretch his hit into a double. The only other hit was a double in the 3rd inning. Reliever Chuckie Fick took over for Smyly to begin the 7th, and he allowed a lone single in his two innings of work. Randy Williams earned a Save with a perfect 9th, including two strikeouts.
Team USA scored one run in the bottom of the 1st. LF AJ Pollock (Diamondbacks) and 2B Andrew Garcia (White Sox) opened the frame with back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners. Garcia was erased when RF Brett Carroll (Red Sox) grounded into a double play, but Pollock scored from third base to give the US a 1-0 lead. Two more runs scored in the 4th, when Carroll reached on a fielding error at third base, and DH Matt Clark (Padres) followed with a huge home run. That 3-0 score held for the rest of the game.
SS Jordy Mercer had to give someone else the chance to be the big hero today. He went 1-for-3, with a single in the 3rd inning, but was picked off first base and caught stealing. C Travis d’Arnaud was hitless in 4 at-bats.
