While we don’t know yet if the MLB amateur draft will go off as planned on June 10-12, or be pushed back, or even possibly changed, we can still take a look at the top players in this draft class. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the seventh overall pick, as well as the 31st and 44th picks on day one. Baseball America expanded their draft rankings to 300 spots today and also updated the previous rankings based on reports they received prior to the baseball work stoppage.
BA now has Louisville starter Reid Detmers listed as the seventh best prospect, up four spots from his previous ranking. The 20-year-old lefty has a 6’2″, workhorse frame, with a fastball that can get into the mid-90s, as well as a curveball that BA refers to as “devastating”. Before play stopped this year, Detmers made four starts and had a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings, with 48 strikeouts and six walks.
Here are highlights from his start back on February 20th this year, courtesy of 2080 Baseball.
The day before that start shown above, BA had Detmers going to the Pirates in their latest mock draft.
