Winter Leagues: Playoffs Continue in Colombia; Ji-Hwan Bae Removed from Active Roster

Published:

In Colombia on Monday night, Francisco Acuna (pictured above) went 1-for-4 with a double, walk, two runs scored and a stolen base in his team’s 5-1 win

Edgar Barrios started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 in his team’s 3-0 win. He is 0-for-12 in three games and did not play in his team’s fourth playoff game.

In Australia this weekend, Ji-Hwan Bae isn’t on the active roster for his team. That could possibly mean that he is done for the season because he played the entire final game last week and there’s no mention of an injury. Bae is hitting .297/.416/.469 in 19 games this winter, with five doubles, two homers, 12 walks and he’s 6-for-6 in stolen bases.

The playoffs in Colombia started back up on Thursday and Francisco Acuna went 0-for-3 with a walk. Through four playoff games, he is 3-for-15 with three walks and a double (.200/.333/.267 slash line).

Acuna’s game was the first action for any member of the Pittsburgh Pirates since Monday. Most leagues have been off since then, with Puerto Rico starting back up on Thursday night and the Dominican starting tonight. It appears that the winter articles will slow up at this point unless some players begin their winter season as part of getting ready for Spring Training. Only a handful appear to still be on active rosters right now.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
