Jason Martin Has Shoulder Surgery

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Friday night that outfielder Jason Martin recently underwent surgery to repair a left shoulder labral tear. The typical full recovery time is 4-6 months, which would place him at 100% some time between the start of Spring Training and the middle of April.

Martin was injured on a play at the plate on September 3rd, shortly after he joined the Pirates as a September call-up. At the time, it was announced that he had a dislocated left shoulder. The initial report from the Pirates said that he would have been out for four weeks, which meant he would miss the rest of the season, but still have a healthy off-season. Things have obviously changed over the last six weeks and now this short-term injury is now a long-term issue and will force him to spend much/all of his off-season in rehab mode.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
