AFL Recap: Switching Things Up a Bit on a Slow Tuesday Night

Published:

The Peoria Javelinas went 3-2 during the first week of Arizona Fall League action. After an off-day on Monday, they opened up week two at home against the Surprise Saguaros tonight. For the first time, none of the Pittsburgh Pirates were in the starting lineup and neither of their two relievers saw action, so there is nothing to recap from this game. Peoria fell to .500 with a 6-4 loss. These same two teams meet up tomorrow night in Surprise.

Normally we wouldn’t post a recap article if no Pirates played for Peoria, but there was actually one prospect of note who saw action on Tuesday in Arizona. The AFL this year is hosting some winter teams from Mexico, as they get ready for their regular season next month. Fabricio Macias, who spent the 2019 season with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, played tonight for Aguilas de Mexicali. Facing off against Glendale, Macias went 1-for-4 with a double. He was rated #10 on our recent Greensboro top ten prospects list. Macias will be included in some future AFL recaps, as Mexicali has four more exhibition games left before heading back to Mexico for the start of their season.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
