The Pittsburgh Pirates brought back right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes in time for Sunday’s game in St Louis. He has been out since July 24th with right triceps inflammation. To make room on the active roster, right-handed pitcher Parker Markel was optioned to Indianapolis.
Holmes made two relief appearances with Altoona during a brief rehab, giving up three runs over two innings on Monday, followed by two shutout innings on Thursday. With the Pirates this season, he has a 6.54 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP, with 34 strikeouts in 31.2 innings.
Markel made two appearances with the Pirates after being recalled on August 3rd. He allowed two runs (one earned) over three innings. The Pirates acquired him off of waivers from the Seattle Mariners on July 27th.
