West Virginia Power 5, Lexington Legends 3 — Game 1 (box)
Two hits by 2B Jarek Cunningham led the Power to a win in the first game of the double-header. The scoring started in the top of the 2nd, when both LF Rogelios Noris and C Ramon Cabrera singled, then scored on 1B Kyle Morgan’s 3-run home run. Lexington came right back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Four singles and an RBI ground out brought in the runs, off starter Eliecer Navarro, to tie the score.
But the Power were not done. They scored an unearned run in the 3rd when CF Evan Chambers reached on an error, then RF Jose Hernandez brought him in with a double into left field. Another error combined with a single to put SS Benji Gonzalez on second base to lead off the view. A bunt moved him to third, and he scored on Cunningham’s RBI single lined into center.
Navarro pitched only those first two innings, then was relieved by Kyle McPherson. McPherson pitched 4 innings and allowed just one single and two walks, then Ryan Kelly pitched a perfect 7th to end the game.

GCL Blue Jays 1, GCL Pirates 0 — Game 1 (box)
The GCL Pirates also played two today. Instead of just 7 innings in the first game, the two teams battled in a scoreless tie all the way until the bottom of the 9th. That was when Jays’ C Pierce Rankin ended the game with a solo home run.
The Pirates were held to 3 hits — a single by 3B Eric Avila, a double by LF Exicardo Cayonez, and a triple by pinch-hitter Gregory Polanco. Avila was also hit by a pitch, following the double in the 2nd inning, but a double play erased Avila and Cayonez was left on base. The triple came with two outs in the 8th, and Polanco was also left on base. Avila led off the 5th with the single, and he also stole second base, but a fielder’s choice had him out at third base.
Starter Vincent Payne pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and a walk, and striking out 5 batters. He got out of a jam in the 2nd inning with a timely double play, going 1-2-3 to get the runner at the plate. After giving up a double to begin the 5th, Payne was relieved by Dinesh Patel, who gave up another double, but held the runner at third, and then got two outs to end the inning. Barrett Phillips pitched the final 3.2 innings and had held the Blue Jays to one hit and one walk before the game-winning homer.

GCL Blue Jays 5, GCL Pirates 4 – Game 2 (box)
A 5-run 3rd inning was all the Blue Jays needed in the second game. Two singles and a fielding error loaded the bases, then a double cleared them, bringing in 3 runs. Two more doubles added two more runs for the Jays and gave the loss to Kevin Kleis, who had pitched just those 3 innings. Rinku Singh pitched the next 3 innings and held the Jays scoreless. Singh loaded the bases with two singles and a walk in the 4th, but got out of the jam with a ground out, then proceeded to retire the side in order in the next two innings. Joan Montero pitched two scoreless innings, then had trouble with control in the 9th. With one out, he hit a batter, threw a wild pitch, balked, got a fly out, then loaded the bases with two more walks. Dinesh Patel came back out to finish the inning with a strikeout.
CF Junior Sosa and rehabbing SS Greg Picart had 3 hits each for the Pirates. They both singled and Sosa scored on an RBI grounder for the first run in the bottom of the 1st. After the Blue Jays got their 5 in the top of the 3rd, both Sosa and Picart singled to begin the bottom of the inning. Two more singles, by DH Justin Howard and RF Gregory Polanco brought in Sosa again. Picart doubled to lead off the 5th, and LF Exicardo Cayonez and Howard both walked. C Elias Diaz’s sacrifice fly brought in Picart, and a grounder RBI by Polanco plated Cayonez for the Pirates final two runs.
