The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Tuesday afternoon that right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi was placed on the 10-day injured list. To take his place on the 25-man roster, the Pirates recalled left-hander Steven Brault.
Burdi was injured last night. While the Pirates didn’t confirm anything today, Jeff Passan from ESPN.com reported that Burdi suffered a strained biceps tendon and flexor mass. He’s currently receiving a second opinion before going ahead with rehab, to confirm that surgery isn’t necessary. The Pirates described Burdi’s injury in the press release as “right bicep/elbow pain”.
Brault was sent down yesterday when Gregory Polanco was activated from the injured list, but he’s eligible to return before ten days because he’s replacing an injured player. Optioned players must spend at least ten days in the minors unless someone is injured prior to that ten day minimum being met.
Burdi will likely end up on the 60-day injured list at some point, but that’s only necessary immediately if they are trying to add someone to the 40-man roster and it’s full.
