As expected since he was sent down two weeks ago, right-handed pitcher Nick Kingham has been promoted to make tonight’s start against the San Diego Padres. Kingham pitched once in Indianapolis, then was moved to Altoona for his last start to remain on schedule for today’s game.
Kingham debuted with the Pirates back in late April and nearly pitched seven perfect innings. Since then at three levels, he has allowed 11 runs over 16.1 innings.
Infielder Max Moroff was sent down to Indianapolis to make room for Kingham on the 25-man roster. Moroff hit .216/.256/.405 in 39 plate appearances over 16 games.
It’s possible that Kingham’s stay this time could be one day and the Pirates will play short-handed on the bench for just tonight. Josh Harrison appears ready to return after three rehab games in Altoona, so he could be back tomorrow, then Joe Musgrove should make his debut when the fifth starter spot comes up again next week. Neither of those moves have been confirmed yet, but it appears to line up that way.
