The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned left-handed pitcher Steven Brault to Indianapolis on Thursday evening. The move is to make room for outfielder Jordan Luplow, who is expected to be added to the 40-man roster tomorrow and promoted from Indianapolis for the game against the San Diego Padres. The Pirates are off tonight, so there is no need to add Luplow to the roster until tomorrow.
Brault made two appearances with the Pirates on this current road trip. He was recalled five days ago when Gregory Polanco was placed on the disabled list. He pitched one inning against the Colorado Rockies on July 22nd, giving up two runs, then returned three days later to throw three shutout innings against the San Francisco Giants. He should return to the starting rotation in Indianapolis to provide depth. At worst for him, he will be back up when rosters expand in September.
