Indianapolis lost 5-1 on Wednesday night in Jameson Taillon’s third rehab start. Taillon did not have a good line in this game, allowing all five runs. There were some positives on the night though. The biggest positive was that he looked strong in the sixth inning, as he built his pitch count up to 97 pitches. He also had nine strikeouts on the night and his curveball was sharp all game.
You can also look at the ways that Toledo scored for some positives. Three of the hits he allowed were to Tigers’ catcher James McCann, who was also on a rehab outing. Two of the runs Taillon gave up should have been unearned, as Gift Ngoepe got a gift from the official scorer on a ball he booted with two outs. Not only did he boot the grounder, he cut in front of second baseman Anderson Feliz, who would have had a routine play. I’m sure if you asked Ngoepe, he would say it was an error and it’s a play he makes 99% of the time.
Where you can’t find positives would be the types of hits he allowed. Besides the grounder that Ngoepe booted, the other eight hits were line drives and nothing cheap. He also walked two batters although one walk included four pitches that just missed the zone and a couple could have been called either way.
I think the biggest takeaway is that he reached 97 pitches and didn’t look tired. Assuming all goes well tomorrow when he sees how he feels, and then during his bullpen in a couple days, we should see his next start happen in Pittsburgh.
Indianapolis had two hits in this game, both from Danny Ortiz. Austin Meadows walked and scored the lone run. Jason Rogers and Joey Terdoslavich each had two walks. Terdoslavich brought home that lone run with a sacrifice fly.

Altoona won 5-3 on Wednesday night, as starter JT Brubaker had a terrific outing against Harrisburg. He went six innings, facing two over the minimum and retiring the last eight batters he faced. Brubaker needed just 77 pitches, as he allowed two singles, no walks and he struck out five batters. He had an 8:4 GO/AO ratio. He now has a 3.99 ERA in 49.2 innings this season. This was his longest outing since returning from a two-week absence due to a blister on his right index finger.
Buddy Borden followed Brubaker and gave up three runs on four hits, including a home run. His ERA went from 1.08 to 2.08 in this game. Jared Lakind and Montana DuRapau finished the game off with a scoreless inning each.
Kevin Kramer connected on his sixth homer of the season in the third inning, his only hit of the game. The big hit of the day for Altoona was a three-run pinch-hit homer by Chase Simpson in the seventh inning. Pablo Reyes and Wyatt Mathisen each had two hits and a run in this game. Reyes collected his ninth double, while Mathisen also drew a walk.
Kevin Newman, Edwin Espinal and Jordan Luplow each went 1-for-4, while Connor Joe continued his slide with an 0-for-4 night. He is 3-for-31 in his last eight games.

West Virginia won 3-2 over Delmarva behind the strong pitching of lefty Oddy Nunez and two home runs. Nunez allowed just three base runners in this game. He hit a batter in the second inning, then erased him on a double play. In the fourth, he issued a one-out walk, then got a grounder and a pop up to end the inning. He gave up a two-out single in the fifth, before getting a grounder to end the inning. The fifth inning single and a second inning fly ball to right field were the only times the ball left the infield while Nunez was on the mound. He needed 62 pitches to get through his night and he posted a 10:1 GO/AO ratio.
Eduardo Vera has been terrific this year for West Virginia while making the jump from the GCL to Low-A. It’s also his first full season back from Tommy John surgery and he is showing an incredible jump in his velocity, going from a soft-tossing righty, to hitting 94-95 MPH. He didn’t have his best stuff on this night, serving up two solo homers. He did however strikeout five batters in three innings, with no walks and a 3:1 GO/AO ratio.
Matt Frawley continued his impressive season with the save in the ninth on just ten pitches. He has a 1.78 ERA in 30.1 innings this season.
Catcher Brent Gibbs had a big game, going 3-for-3 with his second homer. Hunter Owen added his fifth home run. Albert Baur had two hits, a double and an RBI. He has reached base safely in all 27 games he has played this season.

The DSL Pirates lost 10-6 on Wednesday and had a tough loss early in the game as well. Starting pitcher Julio Rosario, who was signed last July 2nd, made his pro debut. It did not go well, as he allowed five runs on one hit, one hit batter and three walks, before being removed with one out in the first inning. Three of the runs scored after he left, with Julio Gonzalez taking over in relief.
In the bottom of the first inning, catcher Samuel Inoa was hit in the face with a pitch and needed to be taken to the hospital. No current update on his condition, as he is still in the hospital, but they believe he at least has a broken nose.
Julio Gonzalez gave up two runs of his own in 1.2 innings, then gave way to Jose Marcano (boxscore currently says Kleiner Machado, but that is wrong). Marcano went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits in his pro debut. Samuel Reyes, the brother of Pirates prospect Pablo Reyes, went 1.1 innings and struck out three batters. He now has six strikeouts in three innings. Next up was Angel Vasquez, making his first appearance since 2015. He had Tommy John surgery, which kept him out all of last year. Vasquez tossed a scoreless ninth.
On offense, top prospect Jean Eusebio went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Third baseman Sherten Apostel drove in three runs, but he also committed his fifth error of the season. The team had just four singles in the game, with most of the damage coming due to nine walks and two hit batters, as well as going 4-for-4 in stolen bases. Outfield prospect Pedro Castillo had a tough day, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
