The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the two-year deal signed by right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson. To make room on the 40-man roster, they have designated RHP Brady Dragmire for assignment.
We posted full analysis of the signing here, this is just the Pirates making the move official and clearing roster space. Hudson’s deal is said to be worth $5.5M each of the next two seasons, with the chance to make up to $7M each season. He has incentives worked in the deal for games finished each year, so expect him to be at the back of the bullpen, and possibly take over the closer role.
The Pirates just picked up Dragmire on waivers exactly one week ago. He has been on quite the ride this off-season. The Pirates acquired him for cash considerations from the Toronto Blue Jays back on October 5th. They then lost him to the Texas Rangers on waivers in November, only to get him back from the Rangers last Wednesday.
The idea with Dragmire being DFA’d is to try to sneak him through waivers, so he can be assigned to the minor leagues as a depth option. He isn’t Major League ready at this point, but he’s a bullpen arm with a lot of upside. So we will see if they are able to get him through this time.
