Francisco Cervelli, Gerrit Cole Leave Game

Published:

PITTSBURGH — Pitcher Gerrit Cole and catcher Francisco Cervelli each left the Pirates’ game against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday night.

Cole pitched two-plus innings and batted in the bottom of the second, but came out of the game after throwing five pitches in the top of the third inning.

Trainer Todd Tomczyk and manager Clint Hurdle came out to the mound to check on Cole, and after a long conversation, the right-hander left the game due to tightness in his right (throwing) triceps.

Cervelli left the game after taking a swing in the bottom of the fourth inning because of pain in his left hand. Both players are receiving treatment.

Cole’s final line included two hits, a walk, three strikeouts and a hit batter over 35 pitchers. Cervelli was 1 for 1 with a single.

Cole was replaced by A.J. Schugel. Usual starter Juan Nicasio will be available out of the bullpen tonight. Chris Stewart replaced Cervelli behind the plate.

We will have more on these situations when information becomes available.
